Strategic Flattery

Strategic flattery is the deliberate use of praise or admiration to shape another person’s perceptions, responses, or behavior, making it a psychological form of interpersonal influence. It works by directing positive feedback toward valued traits or accomplishments, which can increase perceived warmth, reinforce self-esteem, and encourage reciprocity, although its effects depend on credibility and context. In psychology, studying strategic flattery helps explain impression management, persuasion, power dynamics, and relationship formation in workplaces, negotiations, and social interactions. Research also examines when praise strengthens cooperation and when perceived manipulation undermines trust.
