Trust Development

Trust development is the psychological process through which people form expectations that another person, group, or institution will act reliably, honestly, and with concern for their welfare. It emerges through repeated interactions in which consistent behavior, responsiveness, communication, and the fulfillment of commitments provide evidence that reliance is safe, while violations can weaken or reshape trust. In psychology, studying trust development helps explain relationship formation, attachment, cooperation, conflict resolution, and decision-making under uncertainty. This knowledge informs research and practice in clinical relationships, education, organizational teamwork, online communication, and interventions designed to strengthen social connection and collaborative behavior.
