Time-to-event Data

Time-to-event data record the duration until a defined event occurs, such as disease recurrence, equipment failure, or patient recovery, and are central to statistical analysis of timing and risk. Because some observations end before the event occurs, analysts account for censoring while estimating survival functions, hazard rates, and differences between groups. Methods such as Kaplan–Meier estimation, log-rank tests, and Cox proportional hazards models help describe event patterns and assess associations with predictors. These analyses support clinical research, public health, reliability engineering, and other fields where understanding when events occur is as important as determining whether they occur.

2010

Event-related potential (ERP) recording is under utilized in Cognitive Neuroscience because data acquisition techniques are not readily available and this method often has poor spatial resolution. To foster the increased use of ERPs in Cognitive Neuroscience, the present article details key techniques involved in high density ERP data acquisition.

Neuroimaging researchers typically consider the brain's response as the mean activity across repeated experimental trials and disregard signal variability over time as "noise". However, it is becoming clear that there is signal in that noise. This article describes the novel method of multiscale entropy for quantifying brain signal variability in the time domain.

Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) microscopy is a powerful technique for real-time monitoring of signaling events in live cells using various biosensors as reporters. Here we describe how to build a customized epifluorescence FRET imaging system from commercially available components and how to use it for FRET experiments.

Event-related Potentials and the Oddball Task

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Given the overwhelming amount of information captured by the sensory organs, it is crucial that the brain is able to prioritize the processing of certain stimuli, to spend less effort on what might not be currently important and to attend to what is. One heuristic the brain uses is to ignore stimuli that are frequent or constant in favor of stimuli that are unexpected or unique. Therefore, rare events...
