There is a growing appreciation that in addition to well-documented intraspecies quorum sensing systems, small molecules act as signals between microbes of different species. This review will focus on how bacterial small molecules modulate these interspecies interactions. We will particularly emphasize complex relationships such as those between microbes and insects, interactions resulting in non-antagonistic outcomes (i.e. developmental and morphological processes), how co-culture can lead to the discovery of new small molecules, and the use of known compounds to evoke unexpected responses and mediate crosstalk between microbes.

This review will discuss how extracellular signaling compounds influence B. subtilis multicellularity with regard to matrix-producing cannibal differentiation, germination, and swarming behavior, as well as the specificity of the quorum-sensing peptides ComX and CSF. It will also highlight how imaging mass spectrometry can aid in identifying signaling compounds and contribute to our understanding of the functional relationship between such compounds and multicellular behavior.

Bacillus subtilis regula su capacidad de diferenciarse en tipos celulares distintos, que coexisten en respuesta a las mol&#xE9;culas de se&#xF1;alizaci&#xF3;n extracelulares producidas ya sea por s&#xED; mismo, o presentes en su entorno. La producci&#xF3;n de mol&#xE9;culas por c&#xE9;lulas de B. subtilis, as&#xED; como su respuesta a estas se&#xF1;ales, no es uniforme en toda la poblaci&#xF3;n. Hay especificidad y heterogeneidad tanto dentro de las poblaciones gen&#xE9;ticamente id&#xE9;nticos, as&#xED; como en la cepa de nivel y nivel de especie. Esta revisi&#xF3;n se discutir&#xE1; c&#xF3;mo los compuestos de se&#xF1;alizaci&#xF3;n extracelular influye B. subtilis multicelularidad en lo que respecta a la matriz, produciendo la diferenciaci&#xF3;n can&#xED;bal, la germinaci&#xF3;n y el comportamiento de enjambre, as&#xED; como la especificidad de la detecci&#xF3;n de qu&#xF3;rum p&#xE9;ptidos comX y LCR. Tambi&#xE9;n pondr&#xE1; de relieve c&#xF3;mo la imagen de espectrometr&#xED;a de masas puede ayudar en la identificaci&#xF3;n de compuestos de se&#xF1;alizaci&#xF3;n y contribuir a nuestra comprensi&#xF3;n de la relaci&#xF3;n funcional entre estos compuestos y el comportamiento multicelular.
