A new interstitial breast localization marker is proposed which exhibits positive contrast in T1-weighted MRI, ultrasound and x-ray mammography. Unlike previous markers which provide MRI contrast on the basis of a susceptibility-induced signal void, this marker provides a clear positive contrast without any loss of signal or spatial distortion. The marker is composed of 400 microm diameter copper microspheres suspended in a Gd-DTPA-doped gel matrix. Optimal contrast in T1-weighted spoiled gradient recalled MRI was found to occur with the addition of 10 mM Gd-DTPA. Ultrasound contrast was generated on the basis of scattering from the copper microspheres. X-ray contrast was provided by the high x-ray attenuation properties of the copper microspheres. The study demonstrates potential suitability of the marker for use as a breast localization marker based on ex vivo studies of chicken breast.

Next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD corrections to double J/psi production in e+e- annihilation at sqrt[s]=10.6 GeV are calculated. We find that they greatly decrease the cross section, with a K factor (NLO/LO) ranging from -0.31 to 0.25 depending on the renormalization scale. Although the renormalization scale dependence indicates a large uncertainty, when combined with the NLO QCD corrections to J/psi+etac production, it can explain why the double J/psi production could not be found at B factories while the J/psi+etac production could, despite the fact that cross section of the former is larger than that of the latter at LO by a factor of 1.8.

QCD corrections to double J/psi production in e+e- annihilation at sqrt[s]=10.6 GeV.

We calculate the next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to J/psi polarization at the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN Large Hadron Collider. Our results show that the J/psi polarization status drastically changes from transverse-polarization dominant at leading order to longitudinal-polarization dominant at next-to-leading order. Although the theoretical evaluation predicts a larger longitudinal polarization than the value measured at the Tevatron, it may provide a solution towards the previous large discrepancy for J/psi polarization between theoretical predication and experimental measurement.

Next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to J/psi polarization at Tevatron and Large-Hadron-Collider energies.

We calculate the next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD corrections to e;{+}e;{-}-->J/psi gg via color singlet J/psi(3S1) at the B factories. The result shows that the cross section is enhanced to 0.373 pb by a K factor (NLO/LO) of about 1.21. By considering its dependence on the charm quark mass and renormalization scale, the NLO cross section can range from 0.294 to 0.409 pb. Further including the psi;{'} feed-down, sigma[e;{+}e;{-}-->J/psi X(non-cc[over ])] is enhanced by another factor of about 1.29 and reach 0.482 pb. In addition, the momentum distributions of J/psi production and polarization are presented. Recent measurements from Belle agree well with our prediction for the cross section and momentum distribution. It is expected that this process can serve as a very good channel to clarify the J/psi polarization puzzle by performing further experimental measurements.

Next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to e+e- -->J/psi gg at the B factories.

CdS nanoribbons with various cross sections offer the opportunity to deeply understand the interaction between optical cavity and spontaneous emission. Herein, long tapered nanoribbons with the cross sections gradually changing were synthesized by a simple physical vapour deposition method. Morphology dependent micro-region photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy is employed to show Purcell effect along different low symmetry cross sections. Spikes on the PL spectra reveal that local density of optical modes increases when the mode match happens between optical cavity and spontaneous emission. Bound exciton complex related amplified spontaneous emission is observed in a single CdS nanoribbon with well-defined elliptical cross sections and optimized width/thickness ratio ∼1.45. Polarized Raman and TEM confirmed that the nanoribbon with the elliptical cross section adopts the [0002] growth direction with good quality. The results suggest that the cross section resonant cavity would be of importance for both fundamental and practical application of cavity quantum electrodynamics in CdS nanoribbon.

Amplified spontaneous emission from single CdS nanoribbon with low symmetric cross sections.

Based on the nonrelativistic QCD factorization scheme, we present the first complete next-to-leading-order study on the yield and polarization of Υ(1S,2S,3S) hadroproduction. By using the color-octet long-distance matrix elements obtained from fits of the experimental measurements on Υ yield and polarization at the Tevatron and LHC, our results can explain the measurements on the yield very well, and for the polarizations of Υ(1S,2S,3S), they are in (good, good, bad) agreement with recent CMS measurement, but still have some distance from the CDF measurement.

Complete next-to-leading-order study on the yield and polarization of Υ(1S,2S,3S) at the Tevatron and LHC.

With nonrelativistic QCD factorization, we present the first complete next-to-leading order study on the polarization of prompt J/ψ hadroproduction by including feeddown from χ(c)((3)P(J)(1),(3)S(1)(8)) and ψ(2s) which turn out to be very important parts. By using the color-octet long-distance matrix elements obtained from a combined fit of the measurements at the Tevatron and LHC for J/ψ, ψ(2s) and χ(c), the prompt J/ψ polarization predictions are presented, and the results are in agreement with the CDF run I data (except two points), but in conflict with the CDF run II data, while they are close to the ALICE data (inclusive J/ψ). The measurements at the LHC are expected to clarify the situation.

Polarization for prompt J/ψ and ψ(2s) production at the Tevatron and LHC.

The source of hyperpolarized (HP) [(13) C]bicarbonate in the liver during metabolism of HP [1-(13) C]pyruvate is uncertain and likely changes with physiology. Multiple processes including decarboxylation through pyruvate dehydrogenase or pyruvate carboxylase followed by subsequent decarboxylation via phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (gluconeogenesis) could play a role. Here we tested which metabolic fate of pyruvate contributed to the appearance of HP [(13) C]bicarbonate during metabolism of HP [1-(13) C]pyruvate by the liver in rats after 21 h of fasting compared to rats with free access to food. The (13) C NMR of HP [(13) C]bicarbonate was observed in the liver of fed rats, but not in fasted rats where pyruvate carboxylation and gluconeogenesis was active. To further explore the relative fluxes through pyruvate carboxylase versus pyruvate dehydrogenase in the liver under typical conditions of hyperpolarization studies, separate parallel experiments were performed with rats given non-hyperpolarized [2,3-(13) C]pyruvate. (13) C NMR analysis of glutamate isolated from the liver of rats revealed that flux from injected pyruvate through pyruvate dehydrogenase was dominant under fed conditions whereas flux through pyruvate carboxylase dominated under fasted conditions. The NMR signal of HP [(13) C]bicarbonate does not parallel pyruvate carboxylase activity followed by subsequent decarboxylation reaction leading to glucose production. In the liver of healthy well-fed rats, the appearance of HP [(13) C]bicarbonate exclusively reflects decarboxylation of HP [1-(13) C]pyruvate via pyruvate dehydrogenase. © 2016 The Authors. Metabolism of hyperpolarized [1-(13) C]pyruvate through alternate pathways in rat liver.

To develop a rabbit model of xanthogranuloma based on supplementation of dietary cholesterol. The aim of this study was to analyze the xanthogranulomatous lesions using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and histological examination.

MRI and histopathologic study of a novel cholesterol-fed rabbit model of xanthogranuloma.

Metabolic imaging with hyperpolarized carbon-13 allows sequential steps of metabolism to be detected in vivo. Potential applications in cancer, brain, muscular, myocardial, and hepatic metabolism suggest that clinical applications could be readily developed. A primary concern in imaging hyperpolarized nuclei is the irreversible decay of the enhanced magnetization back to thermal equilibrium. Multiple methods for rapid imaging of hyperpolarized substrates and their products have been proposed with a multi-point Dixon method distinguishing itself as a robust protocol for imaging [1-(13) C]pyruvate. We describe here a generalized chemical shift decomposition method that incorporates a single-shot spiral imaging sequence plus a spectroscopic sequence to retain as much spin polarization as possible while allowing detection of metabolites that have a wide range of chemical shift values. The new method is demonstrated for hyperpolarized [1-(13) C]pyruvate, [1-(13) C]acetoacetate, and [2-(13) C]dihydroxyacetone. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
