Sub-micrometer-sized hollow tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) spheres with tunable shell thickness and void size have been fabricated exploiting beta-diketone-functionalized polystyrene (PS) beads as sacrificial templates in a sol-gel process. First, a controlled precipitation of Ta2O5 nanoparticles was carried out on the template surface by hydrolyzing tantalum ethoxide (Ta(OEt)5) at room temperature, and subsequently, the polymer core was removed either via chemical treatment with toluene or calcination at 650 degrees C. The thickness of the tantala shell precipitated on the PS core during the coating process was tuned between 100 and 142 nm by varying the concentration of tantala precursor in the reaction media. The obtained Ta2O5-coated PS particles and hollow microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. Due to the unique optical and dielectric properties, these nanostructured materials are envisaged to be used in applications such as novel building blocks for the fabrication of advanced materials, surface coatings, catalysts, and drug delivery systems.

Synthesis of novel tantalum oxide sub-micrometer hollow spheres with tailored shell thickness.

A three month old baby presented with refractory seizures, dermatosis and persistent metabolic acidosis. Biotinidase deficiency was diagnosed on enzyme assay. Patient responded dramatically to biotin supplementation.

Fabrication of organic-inorganic composite particles with tailored size, shape, and morphology has been attracting great attention from researchers because of their fascinating properties and applications in a variety of potential fields. In this study, we report on the fabrication of PS-In(OH)(3) (polystyrene-indium hydroxide) composite particles by hydrolyzing the In(OC(3)H(7))(3) (indium isopropoxide) salt in the presence of beta-diketone functionalized PS colloidal particles. A systematic investigation of the employed reaction conditions allowed us to tune the morphology, size, and In(OH)(3) content of the PS-In(OH)(3) composite particles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results illustrate that variation in the employed concentration of the In(OC(3)H(7))(3) salt in reaction media can effectively tune the morphology of resulting composite particles between "core-shell" and "raspberry-like". X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirms the phase purity of In(OH)(3) nanoparticles precipitated on the surface of PS beads. Colloidal stability of the composite particles has been found to be reduced with increasing the deposited amount of In(OH)(3) nanoparticles. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) suggests a continuous increase in the deposited amount of In(OH)(3) nanoparticles with increasing concentration of In(OC(3)H(7))(3) salt in reaction media. The resulting PS-In(OH)(3) composite particles are envisioned to be used in a myriad of potential applications including fabrication of optoelectronic devices, absorption/separation supporting material, catalysts, and hydrophobic surfaces.

Tailored growth of In(OH)(3) shell on functionalized polystyrene beads.

This study reports on the fabrication of magnetically responsive hollow titania capsules by confining the superparamagnetic Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles within a hollow and porous titania (TiO(2)) shell. The employed protocol involves precipitation of titania shell on the magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) encapsulated polystyrene beads followed by the calcination of resulting composite particles at elevated temperature. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy reveal the presence of a thick, complete but irregular titania shell on the magnetic polystyrene beads after the templating process. Electron energy loss mapping image analysis has been employed to investigate the spatial distribution of titania and magnetite phases of magnetic hollow titania capsules (MHTCs). Magnetic characterization indicates that both titania-coated magnetic polystyrene beads (TMPBs) and MHTCs are superparamagnetic in nature with the saturated magnetizations of 5.6 and 8.1 emu/g, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals that titania shell of these capsules is composed of photoactive anatase phase. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis has been employed to estimate the specific surface area and the average pore diameter of the fabricated hollow structures. Photocatalytic activity of the fabricated MHTCs for the photodegradation of rhodamine 6G dye has been demonstrated and compared with that of bulk titania nanoparticles.

Template-assisted fabrication of magnetically responsive hollow titania capsules.

A novel and versatile approach for the mixing of ZnO nanofillers into a host polymer matrix, poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA), is reported. Firstly, ZnO nanoparticles are deposited onto the surface of polystyrene (PS) colloidal particles in a "raspberry-like" fashion and subsequently obtained PS/ZnO composite particles are mixed into the PEMA matrix in the range of 0.5 to 5 wt.-%. Microscopic analyses reveal a homogenous distribution of PS/ZnO domains into the PEMA matrix even at 5 wt.-% loading level. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry results indicate an improvement in thermal stability of PEMA matrix after mixing with PS/ZnO filler particles. A significant enhancement in mechanical properties of PEMA matrix in the presence of PS/ZnO particles has been evidenced by dynamic mechanical analysis and three point bending measurements.

A Novel Approach for Mixing ZnO Nanoparticles into Poly(ethyl methacrylate).

Mondini dysplasia is a rare but an important cause for recurrent pyogenic meningitis in children and requires a high index of clinical suspicion for early diagnosis. We present the case of a 7-year-old boy, who presented with 2 episodes of pyogenic meningitis within a span of 1 month. There was no obvious history of hearing abnormalities, but pure tone audiometry suggested profound mixed hearing loss in the left ear. High-resolution computed tomographic scan and magnetic resonance imaging of temporal bones confirmed the diagnosis of Mondini dysplasia in the left ear. Computed tomographic cisternography failed to demonstrate any obvious cerebrospinal fluid leak. The child was managed conservatively and has been asymptomatic since then. Thus, in our patient, Mondini dysplasia as a cause for recurrent pyogenic meningitis was diagnosed (early) during the second episode of meningitis. The need for an early diagnosis of Mondini dysplasia has been stressed in this report.

Mondini dysplasia as a cause for recurrent bacterial meningitis: an early diagnosis.

This study reports on a facile and versatile approach for modification of macroscopic surface via grafting of multifunctional poly(2-oxazoline) molecules in brush-like conformation. For this purpose, carboxyl-terminated poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) molecules have been synthesized by ring-opening cationic polymerization and subsequently grafted on underlined substrates by exploiting the "grafting to" approach. A systematic variation in thickness of the grafted poly (2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) brushes has been demonstrated. Polymer-modified surfaces have been characterized by means of a number of analytical tools including ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolate spectroscopy, attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. Interestingly, poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) molecules have been found to retain their physical properties even after grafting on macroscopic surfaces. Finally, fabricated polymer brushes have been used as platform for stabilization of inorganic nanoparticles on macroscopic surfaces.

This study reports on a facile approach to the fabrication of nanoporous carbon cathodes for lithium sulfur batteries using gyroid carbon replicas based on use of polystyrene-poly-4-vinylpyridine (PS-P4VP) block copolymers as sacrificial templates. The free-standing gyroid carbon network with a highly ordered and interconnected porous structure has been fabricated by impregnating the carbon precursor solution into the gyroid block copolymer nanotemplates and subsequently carbonizing them. A wide range of analytical tools have been employed to characterize fabricated porous carbon material. Prepared nanostructures are envisioned to have a great potential in myriad areas such as energy storage/conversion devices owing to their fascinating morphology exhibiting high surface area and uniform porosity with interconnected three-dimensional networks. The resulting carbon nanoporous structures infused with elemental sulfur have been found to work as a promising electrode for lithium sulfur batteries demonstrating a high cycling stability over more than 200 cycles.

Occult Encephalocele Causing Recurrent Meningitis.

Standard therapies used for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are cytotoxic agents that target rapidly proliferating cells. Unfortunately, this therapeutic approach has limited efficacy and significant toxicity and the majority of AML patients still die of their disease. In contrast to the poor prognosis of most AML patients, most individuals with a rare subtype of AML, acute promyelocytic leukemia, can be cured by differentiation therapy using regimens containing all-trans retinoic acid. GSK3 has been previously identified as a therapeutic target in AML where its inhibition can lead to the differentiation and growth arrest of leukemic cells. Unfortunately, existing GSK3 inhibitors lead to suboptimal differentiation activity making them less useful as clinical AML differentiation agents. Here, we describe the discovery of a novel GSK3 inhibitor, GS87. GS87 was discovered in efforts to optimize GSK3 inhibition for AML differentiation activity. Despite GS87's dramatic ability to induce AML differentiation, kinase profiling reveals its high specificity in targeting GSK3 as compared with other kinases. GS87 demonstrates high efficacy in a mouse AML model system and unlike current AML therapeutics, exhibits little effect on normal bone marrow cells. GS87 induces potent differentiation by more effectively activating GSK3-dependent signaling components including MAPK signaling as compared with other GSK3 inhibitors. GS87 is a novel GSK3 inhibitor with therapeutic potential as a differentiation agent for non-promyelocytic AML. Mol Cancer Ther; 15(7); 1485-94. ©2016 AACR.

A Novel Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3 Inhibitor Optimized for Acute Myeloid Leukemia Differentiation Activity.

Antagonist cycles have an inherent issue of lack of flexibility. As a result where batching of cycles is desired, it is not the preferred protocol in ART cycles. There is also the limitation of ovarian response in antagonist cycle due to the size heterogenesities of antral follicles at the start of stimulation. Among the different options available, use of estrogen in the luteal phase of the preceding cycle has definitely shown benefits with regard to better control of cycle as well as synchronization of follicles available for stimulation. The article gives a detailed analysis of the different options available for timing the egg collection in antagonist cycles, the advantages and drawbacks, and the method of use of estrogen. Whereas in the majority of the trials where estrogen pretreatment was used, the goal of scheduling of egg collection was definitely achieved, increased duration and dose of gonadotropin stimulation were required. There was definite advantage of higher oocyte yield in these cycles. The possibility of premature LH rise later during stimulation and subsequent poor implantation in these cycles has to be further evaluated. Nevertheless, batching of patient friendly antagonist cycles can be effectively possible by use of precycle estrogen treatment.
