Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a common disease that is more prevalent in older people. Surgical intervention is a safe treatment of choice. However, the recurrence rate is relatively high and the outcome is not always satisfactory among surgically treated patients. It is believed that aberrant angiogenesis and intracapsular inflammation contribute to the development of CSDH. Atorvastatin is reported to promote angiogenesis and suppress inflammation. We have recently shown that atorvastatin is effective to non-surgically reduce and eliminate CSDH with minimal side effects. Here, we report a clinical research trial protocol that is designed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of atorvastatin on CSDH.

Over the years, the mechanical ventilation (MV) strategy has changed worldwide. The aim of the present study was to describe the ventilation practices, particularly lung-protective ventilation (LPV), among brain-injured patients in China.

Lung-protective Ventilation in Patients with Brain Injury: A Multicenter Cross-sectional Study and Questionnaire Survey in China.

This study aimed to investigate the performance of the eutectic mixture of menthol and camphor (1:1, w/w) in nanoemulsion formulation for enhanced transdermal penetration of water-insoluble glabridin. Glabridin solubility in different media was determined by a shaking bottle method. The pseudoternary phase diagrams of the oil phase (drug-loaded eutectic mixture or IPM), the surfactant (Tween 80:glycerol = 2:1, w/w), and water were constructed using the aqueous titration method. The obtained glabridin nanoemulsions were characterized and compared on their particle sizes, in vitro and in vivo penetration performance on rat skin, and storage stability. The nanoemulsion formulation was optimized as 0.25% glabridin, 5% oil phase, 10% Tween 80, 5% glycerol, and 79.75% water. The obtained nanoemulsions showed a mean droplet size of nearly 100 nm for different oil phases. And the stability of both formulations was similar after storage for 3 months. In vitro skin permeation study showed that the nanoemulsion formulation with eutectic mixture exhibited higher skin permeability (28.26 μg/cm) than that with IPM (9.94 μg/cm) or the drug solution formulation (3.82 μg/cm), which was further confirmed by in vivo skin permeation tests on the rat skin and human skin. The eutectic mixture is a preferable solvent for glabridin, and its nanoemulsion can be used as an excellent nanocarrier for enhanced transdermal delivery of glabridin.

Saponins identified from fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) seeds are reported effective on dyslipidemia. However, the definite mechanism is still not elucidated systematically. In this study, we evaluate the effects of saponin extract on cholesterol absorption, metabolism, synthesis, and reverse cholesterol transport in vivo.

Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a trauma-associated condition commonly found in elderly patients. Surgery is currently the treatment of choice, but it carries a significant risk of recurrence and death. Nonsurgical treatments remain limited and ineffective. Our recent studies suggest that atorvastatin reduces hematomas and improves the clinical outcomes of patients with CSDH.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a significant role in treating and preventing human diseases. Ischemic heart and cerebrovascular injuries are two types of diseases with different clinical manifestations with high prevalence and incidence. In recent years, it has been reported that many TCM has beneficial effects on ischemic diseases through the inhibition of apoptosis, which is the key target to treat myocardial and cerebral ischemia. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the mechanisms of various TCMs in treating ischemic cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases through anti-apoptotic targets and pathways. However, clinical investigations into elucidating the pharmacodynamic ingredients of TCM are still lacking, which should be further demystified in the future. Overall, the inhibition of apoptosis by TCM may be an effective strategy for treating ischemic cardio-cerebrovascular diseases.
