Grubbs-catalyzed ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of carborane- and phosphonate-containing monomers has been used for the generation of hybrid block copolymers. Molecular weights with M of 50,000 g/mol were readily obtained with polydispersity index values, Đ, between 1.03⁻1.08. Reaction of the phospha ester and carborane substituted oxanorbornene block copolymer with trimethylsilyl bromide led to a new polymer with phosphonic acid functionalities. In application studies, the phospha-carborane functionalized block polymer was tested as heat resistance material. Thermal stability was investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) analysis. Thermal treatment and ceramic yield under air were directly correlated to the carborane content of the block copolymer. However, phosphorus content in the polymer was more crucial for the char residues when heated under nitrogen atmosphere. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) increased as the number of phosphonate functionalities increased. However, corresponding phosphonic acid derivatives featured a lower heat release rate and total heat release. Moreover, the phosphonic acid functionalities of the block copolymer offer efficient chelating capabilities for iron nanoparticles, which is of interest for applications in biomedicine in the future. The complexation with iron oxide nanoparticles was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP⁻MS).

Synthesis and Characterization of Phosphorus- and Carborane-Containing Polyoxanorbornene Block Copolymers.

The response of switchable polymer blends and coatings to temperature variation is important for the development of high-performance materials. Although this has been well studied for bulk materials, a proper understanding at the molecular level, in particular for high stretching forces, is still lacking. Here we investigate the molecular details of the temperature-dependent elastic response of two widely used water-soluble polymers, namely, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and poly(-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAM) with a combined approach using atomic force microscopy (AFM) based single molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS) experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. SMFS became possible by the covalent attachment of long and defined single polymers featuring a functional end group. Most interestingly, varying the temperature produces contrasting effects for PEG and PNiPAM. Surprising as these results might occur at first sight, they can be understood with the help of MD simulations in explicit water. We find that hydration is widely underestimated for the mechanics of macromolecules and that a polymer chain has competing energetic and entropic elastic components. We propose to use the temperature dependence to quantify the energetic behavior for high stretching forces. This fundamental understanding of temperature-dependent single polymer stretching response might lead to innovations like fast switchable polymer blends and coatings with polymer chains that act antagonistically.

Opposing Temperature Dependence of the Stretching Response of Single PEG and PNiPAM Polymers.

The preparation of ordered macroporous SiCN ceramics has attracted significant interest and is an attractive area for various applications, e.g., in the fields of catalysis, gas adsorption, or membranes. Non-oxidic ceramics, such as SiCN, own a great stability based on the covalent bonds between the containing elements, which leads to interesting properties concerning resistance and stability at high temperature. Their peculiar properties have become more and more important for a manifold of applications, like catalysis or separation processes, at high temperatures. Within this work, a feasible approach for the preparation of ordered porous materials by taking advantage of polymer-derived ceramics is presented. To gain access to free-standing films consisting of porous ceramic materials, the combination of monodisperse organic polymer-based colloids with diameters of 130 nm and 180 nm featuring a processable preceramic polymer is essential. For this purpose, the tailored design of hybrid organic/inorganic particles featuring anchoring sites for a preceramic polymer in the soft shell material is developed. Moreover, polymer-based core particles are used as sacrificial template for the generation of pores, while the preceramic shell polymer can be converted to the ceramic matrix after thermal treatment. Two different routes for the polymer particles, which can be obtained by emulsion polymerization, are followed for covalently linking the preceramic polysilazane Durazane1800 (Merck, Germany): (i) Free radical polymerization and (ii) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) conditions. These hybrid hard core/soft shell particles can be processed via the so-called melt-shear organization for the one-step preparation of free-standing particle films. A major advantage of this technique is the absence of any solvent or dispersion medium, enabling the core particles to merge into ordered particle stacks based on the soft preceramic shell. Subsequent ceramization of the colloidal crystal films leads to core particle degradation and transformation into porous ceramics with ceramic yields of 18-54%.

Combining Soft Polysilazanes with Melt-Shear Organization of Core-Shell Particles: On the Road to Polymer-Templated Porous Ceramics.

Nanoparticles offer unique properties as photocatalysts with large surface areas. Under irradiation with light, the associated near-fields can induce, enhance, and control molecular adsorbate reactions on the nanoscale. So far, however, there is no simple method available to spatially resolve the near-field induced reaction yield on the surface of nanoparticles. Here we close this gap by introducing reaction nanoscopy based on three-dimensional momentum-resolved photoionization. The technique is demonstrated for the spatially selective proton generation in few-cycle laser-induced dissociative ionization of ethanol and water on SiO nanoparticles, resolving a pronounced variation across the particle surface. The results are modeled and reproduced qualitatively by electrostatic and quasi-classical mean-field Mie Monte-Carlo (MC) calculations. Reaction nanoscopy is suited for a wide range of isolated nanosystems and can provide spatially resolved ultrafast reaction dynamics on nanoparticles, clusters, and droplets.

Few-cycle laser driven reaction nanoscopy on aerosolized silica nanoparticles.

Ultrahigh molecular weight (UHMW) diblock copolymers (DBCs) have emerged as a promising template for fabricating large-sized nanostructures. Therefore, it is of high significance to systematically study the influence of film thickness and solvent vapor annealing (SVA) on the structure evolution of UHMW DBC thin films. In this work, spin coating of an asymmetric linear UHMW polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) DBC is used to fabricate thin films, which are spherically structured with an inter-domain distance larger than 150 nm. To enhance the polymer chain mobility and facilitate approaching equilibrium nanostructures, SVA is utilized as a post-treatment of the spin coated films. With increasing film thickness, a local hexagonal packing of PMMA half-spheres on the surface can be obtained, and the order is improved at larger thickness, as determined by grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). Additionally, the films with locally hexagonal packed half-spherical morphology show a poor order-order-poor order transition upon SVA, indicating the realization of ordered structure using suitable SVA parameters.

Self-Assembly in ultrahigh molecular weight sphere-forming diblock copolymer thin films under strong confinement.

The motion of core-shell colloids during laser heating is studied using angle-dependent pump-probe dynamic light scattering. The cores consist of a single spherical gold nanoparticle whose localized surface plasmon resonance has a strong spectral overlap with the wavelength of the pump laser. They are homogeneously encapsulated in thick hydrogel shells composed of either chemically cross-linked poly-N-isopropylacrylamide or poly[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate], both of which exhibit a temperature-dependent volume phase transition. Thus, upon heating beyond the transition temperature, the hydrogel shells shrink. Intensity-time autocorrelation functions are recorded while illuminating the samples with the pump laser and hence heating the gold cores. With increasing laser intensity, the dynamics changes from normal Brownian motion to superdiffusion. Nevertheless, in the high-q limit, the relaxation times can be extracted and used to estimate the temperature increase, which can reach almost 10 K. This causes a significant deswelling of the hydrogel shells, which is also measured.

From normal diffusion to superdiffusion: Photothermal heating of plasmonic core-shell microgels.

The development of diblock copolymer (DBC) nanocomposite films containing magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) with diameters () over 20 nm is a challenging task. To host large iron oxide NPs (FeO,  = 27 ± 0.6 nm), an ultrahigh molecular weight (UHMW) linear DBC polystyrene--poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS--PMMA) is used as a template in the present work. Due to hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic acid ligands of the NPs and the ester groups in PMMA, the NPs show an affinity to the PMMA block. The localization of the NPs inside the DBC is investigated as a function of the NP concentration. At low NP concentrations, NPs are located preferentially at the interface between PS and PMMA domains to minimize the interfacial tension caused by the strong segregation strength of the UHMW DBC. At high NP concentrations (≥10 wt %), chain-like NP aggregates (a head-to-tail orientation) are observed in the PMMA domains, resulting in a change of the morphology from sphere to ellipsoid for part of the PMMA domains. Magnetic properties of the hybrid films are probed via superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. All hybrid films show ferrimagnetism and are promising for potential applications in magnetic data storage.
