This study evaluates the impact of an independent postmidterm question analysis exercise on the ability of students to answer subsequent exam questions on the same topics. It was conducted in three sections (âˆ¼400 students/section) of introductory biology. Graded midterms were returned electronically, and each student was assigned a subset of questions answered incorrectly by more than 40% of the class to analyze as homework. The majority of questions were at Bloom's application/analysis level; this exercise therefore emphasized learning at these higher levels of cognition. Students in each section answered final exam questions matched by topic to all homework questions, providing a within-class control group for each question. The percentage of students who correctly answered the matched final exam question was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the Topic Analysis versus Control Analysis group for seven of 19 questions. We identified two factors that influenced activity effectiveness: 1) similarity in topic emphasis of the midterm-final exam question pair and 2) quality of the completed analysis homework. Our data suggest that this easy-to-implement exercise will be useful in large-enrollment classes to help students develop self-regulated learning skills. Additional strategies to help introductory students gain a broader understanding of topic areas are discussed.

Assessment of learning gains associated with independent exam analysis in introductory biology.

Cette &#xE9;tude &#xE9;value l&#x26;#39;impact d&#x26;#39;un exercice ind&#xE9;pendant question postmidterm analyse sur la capacit&#xE9; des &#xE9;l&#xE8;ves &#xE0; r&#xE9;pondre &#xE0; des questions d&#x26;#39;examen ult&#xE9;rieur sur les m&#xEA;mes sujets. Elle a &#xE9;t&#xE9; r&#xE9;alis&#xE9;e en trois sections (~ 400 &#xE9;tudiants / section) d&#x26;#39;introduction de la biologie. Midterms Graded ont &#xE9;t&#xE9; retourn&#xE9;s par voie &#xE9;lectronique, et chaque &#xE9;l&#xE8;ve a re&#xE7;u un sous-ensemble de questions r&#xE9;pondues incorrectement par plus de 40% de la classe &#xE0; analyser en tant que devoirs. La majorit&#xE9; des questions ont &#xE9;t&#xE9; au Bloom application / analyse au niveau; cet exercice a donc soulign&#xE9; l&#x26;#39;apprentissage &#xE0; ces niveaux plus &#xE9;lev&#xE9;s de la cognition. Diese Studie untersucht die Auswirkungen einer unabh&auml;ngigen postmidterm Frage-Analyse-&Uuml;bung auf die F&auml;higkeit des Studenten, nachfolgende Pr&uuml;fungsfragen zu den gleichen Themen zu beantworten. Es wurde in drei Abschnitten (&sim;400 Studenten/Abschnitt) des Einleitung Biologie durchgef&uuml;hrt. Abgestufte Mittelklausuren wurden elektronisch zur&uuml;ckgegeben wurde, und jeder Sch&uuml;ler eine Teilmenge der Fragen falsch beantwortet, um mehr als 40 % der Klasse als Hausaufgabe zu analysieren. Die meisten Fragen wurden auf Blooms Anwendungsanalyse/Ebene; Diese &Uuml;bung betonte daher lernen auf diesen h&ouml;heren Ebenen der Wahrnehmung. Questo studio valuta l&#39;impatto di un esercizio di analisi indipendente postmidterm questione sulla capacit&agrave; degli studenti di rispondere alle domande di esame successivo sugli stessi argomenti. &Egrave; stato condotto in tre sezioni (&sim;400 studenti/sezione) della biologia introduttiva. Graduata midterms tornarono elettronicamente, e ogni studente &egrave; stato assegnato un sottoinsieme di domande ha risposto in modo errato di oltre il 40% della classe per analizzare come i compiti. La maggior parte delle domande era a livello di applicazione e l&#39;analisi di Bloom; questo esercizio ha sottolineato quindi imparare a questi livelli pi&ugrave; alti della cognizione. Este estudio eval&#xFA;a el impacto de un ejercicio independiente de postmidterm an&#xE1;lisis de la pregunta sobre la capacidad de los estudiantes a responder a las preguntas del examen posteriores sobre los mismos temas. Se llev&#xF3; a cabo en tres secciones (~ 400 estudiantes por secci&#xF3;n) de introducci&#xF3;n a la biolog&#xED;a. Ex&#xE1;menes parciales escalonados, fueron devueltos por v&#xED;a electr&#xF3;nica, y cada estudiante se le asigna un subconjunto de preguntas contestadas correctamente por m&#xE1;s del 40% de la clase para analizar como tarea. La mayor&#xED;a de las preguntas estaban en la aplicaci&#xF3;n de Bloom / an&#xE1;lisis a nivel; este ejercicio por lo tanto, hizo hincapi&#xE9; en el aprendizaje en estos niveles superiores de conocimiento. Los estudiantes en cada secci&#xF3;n responde a las preguntas examen final emparejados por tema a todas las preguntas de la tarea, proporcionando un grupo de control dentro de la clase para cada pregunta. El porcentaje de estudiantes que hayan respondido correctamente a la pregunta corresponde el examen final fue significativamente mayor (p &#x26;lt;0,05) en el an&#xE1;lisis del tema frente al grupo de An&#xE1;lisis de Control de siete de las 19 preguntas. Se identificaron dos factores que influy&#xF3; la actividad de la eficacia: 1) la similitud en el &#xE9;nfasis tema de la pareja examen parcial de final de la pregunta y la calidad 2) de la tarea de an&#xE1;lisis realizado. Nuestros datos sugieren que esta f&#xE1;cil de poner en pr&#xE1;ctica el ejercicio ser&#xE1; de utilidad en las clases de gran inscripci&#xF3;n para ayudar a los estudiantes a desarrollar habilidades de autorregulaci&#xF3;n del aprendizaje. In hematologic diseases, such as sickle cell disease (SCD) and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), pathological biophysical interactions among blood cells, endothelial cells, and soluble factors lead to microvascular occlusion and thrombosis. Here, we report an in vitro "endothelialized" microfluidic microvasculature model that recapitulates and integrates this ensemble of pathophysiological processes. Under controlled flow conditions, the model enabled quantitative investigation of how biophysical alterations in hematologic disease collectively lead to microvascular occlusion and thrombosis. Using blood samples from patients with SCD, we investigated how the drug hydroxyurea quantitatively affects microvascular obstruction in SCD, an unresolved issue pivotal to understanding its clinical efficacy in such patients. In addition, we demonstrated that our microsystem can function as an in vitro model of HUS and showed that shear stress influences microvascular thrombosis/obstruction and the efficacy of the drug eptifibatide, which decreases platelet aggregation, in the context of HUS. These experiments establish the versatility and clinical relevance of our microvasculature-on-a-chip model as a biophysical assay of hematologic pathophysiology as well as a drug discovery platform.
