â€¢ Premise of the study: Exceptions to the ideal of complete reproductive isolation between species are commonly encountered in diverse plant, animal, and fungal groups, but often the causative ecological processes are poorly understood. In flowering plants, the outcome of hybridization depends in part on the effectiveness of pollinators in interspecific pollen transport. In the Asclepias exaltata and A. syriaca (Apocynaceae) hybrid zone in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, extensive introgression has been documented. The objectives of this study were to (1) determine the extent of pollinator overlap among A. exaltata, A. syriaca, and their hybrids and (2) identify the insect taxa responsible for hybridization and introgression. â€¢ Methods: We observed focal plants of parental species and hybrids to measure visitation rate, visit duration, and per-visit pollinia removal and deposition, and we calculated pollinator effectiveness and importance. â€¢ Key results: Visitation rates varied significantly between the 2 yr of the study. Overall, Apis mellifera, Bombus sp., and Epargyreus clarus were the most important pollinators. However, Bombus sp. was the only visitor that was observed to both remove and insert pollinia for both parent species as well as hybrids. â€¢ Conclusions: We conclude that Bombus may be a key agent of hybridization and introgression in these sympatric milkweed populations, and hybrids are neither preferred nor selected against by pollinators. Thus, we have identified a potential mechanism for how hybrids act as bridges to gene flow between A. exaltata and A. syriaca. These results provide insights into the breakdown of prezygotic isolating mechanisms.

Differential pollinator effectiveness and importance in a milkweed (Asclepias, Apocynaceae) hybrid zone.

&bull; Principe de l&#39;&eacute;tude : Exceptions &agrave; l&#39;id&eacute;al de complet isolement reproductif entre esp&egrave;ces sont couramment rencontr&eacute;es dans la diversit&eacute; v&eacute;g&eacute;tale, animale et des groupes fongiques, mais souvent les processus &eacute;cologiques causatifs sont mal connues. Chez les angiospermes, les r&eacute;sultats d&#39;hybridation d&eacute;pend en partie de l&#39;efficacit&eacute; des pollinisateurs dans le transport du pollen intersp&eacute;cifiques. &bull; Premisa del estudio: excepciones al ideal de completo aislamiento reproductivo entre especies se encuentran com&uacute;nmente en diversas plantas, animales y grupos de hongos, pero a menudo los procesos ecol&oacute;gicos causativos son poco conocidos. En plantas con flores, el resultado de la hibridaci&oacute;n depende en parte de la efectividad de los polinizadores en el transporte de polen interespec&iacute;fica. En las Asclepias exaltata y zona h&iacute;brida de a. syriaca (Apocynaceae) en el Parque Nacional Shenandoah, Virginia, introgresi&oacute;n extensa se ha documentado. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron (1) determinar el grado de solapamiento de polinizadores entre exaltata a., a. syriaca y sus h&iacute;bridos y (2) identificar los taxa insectos responsables de hibridaci&oacute;n e introgresi&oacute;n. &bull; M&eacute;todos: observamos focales plantas de especies parentales y h&iacute;bridos tasa de visitaci&oacute;n de medida, duraci&oacute;n de la visita y eliminaci&oacute;n de polinias por visita y deposici&oacute;n, y se calcularon la efectividad de polinizadores y la importancia. &bull; Principales resultados: las tasas de visitas variaron significativamente entre los 2 a&ntilde;os del estudio. En general, Apis mellifera, Bombus SP. y Epargyreus clarus fueron los polinizadores m&aacute;s importantes. Sin embargo, Bombus SP. fue el &uacute;nico visitante que se observ&oacute; tanto eliminar e insertar polinias por tanto especies progenitoras como h&iacute;bridos. &bull; CONCLUSIONES: Concluimos que Bombus puede ser un agente clave de hibridaci&oacute;n e introgresi&oacute;n en estas poblaciones simp&aacute;tricas algodoncillo, y h&iacute;bridos son ni preferidos seleccionados contra por polinizadores. As&iacute;, hemos identificado un mecanismo potencial para c&oacute;mo h&iacute;bridos act&uacute;an como puentes para el flujo g&eacute;nico entre exaltata a. y a. syriaca. Estos resultados proporcionan informaci&oacute;n sobre la ruptura de los mecanismos de aislamiento prezig&oacute;ticas.
