The degradation of live plant biomass in fungus gardens of leaf-cutting ants is poorly characterised but fundamental for understanding the mutual advantages and efficiency of this obligate nutritional symbiosis. Controversies about the extent to which the garden-symbiont Leucocoprinus gongylophorus degrades cellulose have hampered our understanding of the selection forces that induced large scale herbivory and of the ensuing ecological footprint of these ants. Here we use a recently established technique, based on polysaccharide microarrays probed with antibodies and carbohydrate binding modules, to map the occurrence of cell wall polymers in consecutive sections of the fungus garden of the leaf-cutting ant Acromyrmex echinatior. We show that pectin, xyloglucan and some xylan epitopes are degraded, whereas more highly substituted xylan and cellulose epitopes remain as residuals in the waste material that the ants remove from their fungus garden. These results demonstrate that biomass entering leaf-cutting ant fungus gardens is only partially utilized and explain why disproportionally large amounts of plant material are needed to sustain colony growth. They also explain why substantial communities of microbial and invertebrate symbionts have evolved associations with the dump material from leaf-cutting ant nests, to exploit decomposition niches that the ant garden-fungus does not utilize. Our approach thus provides detailed insight into the nutritional benefits and shortcomings associated with fungus-farming in ants.

La d&eacute;gradation de la biomasse des plantes vivantes dans les jardins de champignon des fourmis phyllophages est mal caract&eacute;ris&eacute;, mais fondamental pour comprendre les avantages mutuels et l&#39;efficacit&eacute; de cette symbiose nutritionnelle obligatoire. Controverses au sujet de la mesure &agrave; laquelle le jardin-symbiont Leucocoprinus gongylophorus d&eacute;grade cellulose ont nui &agrave; notre compr&eacute;hension des forces s&eacute;lection qui induit des herbivores de grande &eacute;chelle et de l&#39;empreinte &eacute;cologique qui s&#39;ensuit de ces fourmis. Ici, nous utilisons une technique r&eacute;cemment cr&eacute;&eacute;e, issue des microarrays polysaccharide hybrid&eacute;s avec des anticorps et des modules de liaison de glucides, pour mapper l&#39;occurrence de polym&egrave;res pari&eacute;taux dans les sections cons&eacute;cutives du jardin de la Fourmi coupe-feuille Acromyrmex echinatior champignon. Nous montrons que la pectine, xyloglucan et certains &eacute;pitopes xylane sont d&eacute;grad&eacute;es, alors que les plus hautement substitu&eacute;s xylane et cellulose &eacute;pitopes restent en quantit&eacute;s r&eacute;siduelles dans les d&eacute;chets qui enl&egrave;vent les fourmis de leur jardin de champignon. Ces r&eacute;sultats d&eacute;montrent que la biomasse entrant dans les jardins de champignon Fourmi coupe-feuille est utilis&eacute; que partiellement et expliquer pourquoi disproportionnellement plus grandes quantit&eacute;s de mat&eacute;riel v&eacute;g&eacute;tal sont n&eacute;cessaires pour soutenir la croissance de la colonie. Der Abbau der live Pflanze Biomasse in Pilz-G&auml;rten der Blatt-schneiden Ameisen ist schlecht gekennzeichnet, aber grundlegend f&uuml;r das Verst&auml;ndnis der gegenseitigen Vorteile und Effizienz dieser obligat Ern&auml;hrungs-Symbiose. Kontroversen &uuml;ber das Ausma&szlig;, zu dem der Garten-Symbiont Faltenschirmlinge (Leucocoprinus) Gongylophorus Zellulose degradiert, haben unser Verst&auml;ndnis von den Auswahl-Kr&auml;fte, die gro&szlig; angelegte Herbivorie induziert und des damit verbundenen &ouml;kologischen Fu&szlig;abdrucks diese Ameisen behindert. Hier verwenden wir eine k&uuml;rzlich geschaffene Technik, basierend auf Polysaccharid-Microarrays sondiert mit Antik&ouml;rpern und Kohlenhydrat-Bindung-Module, um das Vorkommen der Zellwand Polymere in aufeinander folgenden Abschnitten des Gartens Pilz der die Blatt-Ausschnitt Ameise Acromyrmex Echinatior zuzuordnen. Wir zeigen, dass Pektin, Xyloglucan und einige Xylane Epitope werden abgebaut, w&auml;hrend mehr hoch Xylane ersetzt und Zellulose Epitope bleiben als Residuen in das &uuml;berfl&uuml;ssige Material, das die Ameisen aus ihrem Garten Pilz zu entfernen. Diese Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Biomasse Eingabe Blatt-Ausschnitt Ameise Pilz G&auml;rten ist nur teilweise genutzt und erkl&auml;ren, warum die unverh&auml;ltnism&auml;&szlig;ig gro&szlig;e Mengen an Pflanzenmaterial erforderlich sind, um die Kolonie Wachstum aufrechtzuerhalten. Sie erkl&auml;ren auch, warum substanzielle Gemeinschaften mikrobielle und Wirbellosen Symbionten Verb&auml;nde mit dem Dump-Material von Blatt-Ausschnitt Ameise Nester, Zersetzung Nischen zu nutzen, die die Ameise Garten-Pilz nicht nutzen wird entwickelt haben. Unser Ansatz bietet somit detaillierte Einblicke in die ern&auml;hrungsphysiologischen Vorz&uuml;ge und M&auml;ngel, die Pilz-Landwirtschaft in Ameisen zugeordnet.

La degradazione della biomassa vegetale dal vivo nei giardini di fungo delle formiche foglia-taglio &egrave; scarsamente caratterizzata ma fondamentali per la comprensione dei reciproci vantaggi e l&#39;efficienza di questa simbiosi nutrizionali obligate. Polemiche circa la misura in cui il giardino-simbionte Lepiota gongylophorus degrada la cellulosa hanno ostacolato la nostra comprensione delle forze selezione che indotta correlasse su larga scala e di conseguente impronta ecologica di queste formiche. Qui usiamo una tecnica recentemente stabilita, basata sui microarrays polisaccaride sondato con anticorpi e moduli di associazione di carboidrati, per mappare l&#39;occorrenza di polimeri di parete cellulare nelle sezioni consecutive del giardino della leaf-cutting ant Acromyrmex echinatior fungo. Mostriamo che pectina, xyloglucan e alcuni epitopi xylan sono degradati, considerando che pi&ugrave; altamente sostituito xylan e cellulosa epitopi restano come residui nel materiale di scarto che le formiche rimuovere dal loro giardino di fungo. Questi risultati dimostrano che biomassa entrando giardini di leaf-cutting ant fungo &egrave; utilizzato solo parzialmente e spiegare perch&eacute; sproporzionato grandi quantit&agrave; di materiale vegetale sono necessari per sostenere la crescita della Colonia. Spiegano anche perch&eacute; sostanziale comunit&agrave; di simbionti microbici e invertebrati hanno evoluto le associazioni con il materiale di discarica da nidi di formiche foglia-taglio, di sfruttare nicchie di decomposizione che non utilizzano il giardino ant-fungo. Il nostro approccio cos&igrave; fornisce informazioni dettagliate i benefici nutrizionali e difetti associati a fungo-allevamento di formiche.

La degradaci&oacute;n de la biomasa de plantas vivas en jardines de hongos de hormigas cortadoras de hojas es mal caracterizado pero fundamental para entender las ventajas mutuas y la eficiencia de esta simbiosis nutricional obligue. Las controversias sobre el grado al cual el jard&iacute;n-simbionte Leucocoprinus gongylophorus degrada celulosa han obstaculizado nuestro entendimiento de las fuerzas de la selecci&oacute;n que indujo a gran escala de herb&iacute;voros y de la huella ecol&oacute;gica resultante de estas hormigas. Aqu&iacute; utilizamos una t&eacute;cnica recientemente establecida, basada en microarreglos de polisac&aacute;rido hurgarla con anticuerpos y m&oacute;dulos de enlace de hidratos de carbono, para asignar la ocurrencia de los pol&iacute;meros de la pared celular en secciones consecutivas del jard&iacute;n de la hormigas cortadoras de hojas Acromyrmex echinatior hongo. Demostramos la pectina, xyloglucan y algunos ep&iacute;topos de xilano son degradados, mientras que m&aacute;s altamente sustituidos xilano y celulosa epitopos quedan como residuos en el material de desecho que las hormigas se retire de su jard&iacute;n de hongos. Estos resultados demuestran que la biomasa entrar en jardines de hongos de hormigas cortadoras de hojas se utiliza s&oacute;lo parcialmente y explicar por qu&eacute; desproporcionadamente grandes cantidades de material vegetal se necesitan para sostener el crecimiento de la Colonia. Tambi&eacute;n explican por qu&eacute; importantes comunidades de invertebrados y microbios simbiontes han evolucionado de asociaciones con el material de descarga de nidos de hormigas cortadoras de hojas, para explotar nichos de descomposici&oacute;n que no utilizan el jard&iacute;n-hongo de la hormiga. As&iacute;, nuestro enfoque proporciona informaci&oacute;n detallada sobre los beneficios nutricionales y deficiencias asociadas con el cultivo de hongos en las hormigas.
