The number of nurses across the United States with expertise in agricultural health nursing is unknown, yet as many as 8,000 are needed. This article describes agricultural health content in nursing programs in the southeastern United States. Agriculture is primarily family based but ranks among the top three most hazardous industries in America. Nurses in the southeastern United States serve more than 541,000 farm families, more than a quarter of the nation's agricultural population. A 15-item survey was mailed to 185 nursing schools located within 13 southeastern states. Information was requested about undergraduate and graduate curricula that included information about agricultural health and safety. Surveys were returned from 113 programs (61.1%). Schools with larger percentages of rural students were more likely to include mention of agricultural health; however, scant attention was given to any rurally focused content. In 27.4% of the schools, no mention of agricultural health issues was made, and 54.0% of nursing faculty who completed the survey were not aware of the need for nurses with agricultural health expertise. Results suggested that, when agricultural health topics were presented in class, student interest in the topic increased. Given the occupational hazards faced in agriculture and the region's economic dependence on agriculture, increased attention should be focused on agricultural health content within nursing programs.

One industrially important metal oxide nanoparticle (NP) is cadmium oxide (CdO). A study was performed using timed-pregnant CD-1 mice to determine if Cd associated with inhaled CdO NP could reach the placenta and adversely affect the developing fetus and/or neonate. Pregnant mice were exposed by inhalation either every other day to 100 Î¼g of freshly generated CdO/m(3) (exposure 1) or daily to 230 Î¼g CdO/m(3) (exposure 2). In each exposure, mice were exposed to CdO NP or carrier gas (control) for 2.5 h from 4.5 days post coitus (dpc) through 16.5 dpc. At 17.5 dpc, fetuses and placentas from both exposures 1 and 2 were collected, measured, and weighed. A subgroup from the second exposure was allowed to give birth, and neonates were weighed daily until weaning. Cadmium in the uterus and placenta, as well as in other maternal organs, was elevated in NP-treated mice, but was undetectable in fetuses at 17.5 dpc. Daily inhalation of 230 Î¼g CdO NP/m(3) decreased the incidence of pregnancy (i.e., no evidence of implantation) by 23%, delayed maternal weight gain, altered placental weight, and decreased fetal length, as well as delayed neonatal growth. This study demonstrates that inhalation of CdO NP during pregnancy adversely affects reproductive fecundity and alters fetal and postnatal growth of the developing offspring.

Glycyrrhizin, an abundant bioactive component of the medicinal licorice root is rapidly metabolized by gut commensal bacteria into 18Î²-glycyrrhetinic acid (GRA). Either or both of these compounds have been shown to have antiviral, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-ulcerative, anti-tumor, anti-allergenic and anti-inflammatory activity in vitro or in vivo. In this study, the ability of GRA to modulate immune responses at the small intestinal mucosa when delivered orally was investigated. Analysis of cytokine transcription in duodenal and ileal tissue in response to GRA treatment revealed a pattern of chemokine and chemokine receptor gene expression predictive of B cell recruitment to the gut. Consistent with this finding, GRA induced increases in CD19(+) B cells in the lamina propria and B220(+) B cell aggregates framed by CD11c(+) dendritic cells in structures resembling isolated lymphoid follicles (ILF). Using a mouse model of rotavirus infection, GRA reduced the duration of viral antigen shedding, and endpoint serum antibody titers were higher in GRA-treated animals. Together the data suggest GRA delivered orally augments lymphocyte recruitment to the intestinal mucosa and induces maturation of B cell-rich ILF independently of ectopic antigenic stimulus. These results provide further support a role for dietary ligands in modulation of dynamic intestinal lymphoid tissue.

Glicirricina, un abundante componente bioactivo de la ra&iacute;z de regaliz medicinales se metaboliza r&aacute;pidamente por las bacterias comensales del intestino en 18&beta;-glycyrrhetinic acid (GRA). Uno o ambos de estos compuestos han demostrado para tener actividad antiviral, antihepatot&oacute;xico, anti-ulcerosa, antitumoral, antial&eacute;rgica y antiinflamatoria in vitro o in vivo. En este estudio, se investig&oacute; la capacidad de GRA para modular la respuesta inmune en la mucosa intestinal peque&ntilde;a cuando entregado por v&iacute;a oral. An&aacute;lisis de la transcripci&oacute;n de citocinas en tejido duodenal y ileal en respuesta al tratamiento de GRA revelaron un patr&oacute;n de quimiocina y chemokine receptor genes predictivos de reclutamiento de c&eacute;lulas B en el intestino. Consistente con este hallazgo, GRA indujo aumentos en las c&eacute;lulas de B CD19(+) en la l&aacute;mina propia y agregados de c&eacute;lulas B B220(+) enmarcados por las c&eacute;lulas dendr&iacute;ticas CD11c(+) en estructuras que se asemejan a los fol&iacute;culos linfoides aislados (ILF). Usando un modelo de rat&oacute;n de la infecci&oacute;n por rotavirus, GRA redujo la duraci&oacute;n de ant&iacute;geno viral del vertimiento y t&iacute;tulos de anticuerpos s&eacute;ricos extremo fueron mayores en animales tratados con GRA.
