Poor mechanical properties, undesirable fast dissolution rate, and lack of antibacterial activity limit the application of hydroxyapatite (HA) as an implant coating material. To overcome these limitations, a hybrid coating of Ag-substituted fluorhydroxyapatite and titania nanotube (TNT) was prepared.

A multifaceted coating with favourable cytocompatibility, osteogenic activity and antibacterial properties would be of great significance and value due to its capability for improving osseointegration and alleviating prosthesis loosening. This study marks the first report on the coating of TiO nanotubular (TNT) arrays with Sr-and-Si-substituted hydroxyapatite (SSHA) endowed with antibacterial characteristics using silver ions. This TNT layer coated with Ag-substituted SSHA (SSAgHA) formed a composite coating with an interconnected microporous structure and a homogeneous distribution of Sr, Si and Ag; such a coating promoted cell adhesion and osteogenic potential. The anchoring effect of the TNT layer improved the adhesion strength of the SSAgHA/TNT coating to 16.9 ± 3.1 MPa, which was higher than the 15 MPa set in the ISO standard 13 779-4:2002. Moreover, the bio-corrosion resistance of the underlying Ti substrate was greatly enhanced by the composite coating. Hydroxyapatite (HA) and SSAgHA coatings provided a suitable environment for the adhesion, spreading and proliferation of mouse osteoblasts. The SSAgHA coating excellently inhibited bacterial activity and enhanced osteoinductivity with higher osteogenic differentiation compared with the HA coating. Sr and Si dopants increased the expression levels of the genes related to osteogenesis and successfully offset the potential cytotoxicity of Ag ions. Super-osteoinductivity was attributed to the rough and superhydrophilic surface of the composite coating. Therefore, the present study demonstrated the potential of the electrodeposited SSAgHA/TNT composite coating as a promising metallic implant with great intrinsic antibacterial activity and osteointegration ability.

Si, Sr, Ag co-doped hydroxyapatite/TiO coating: enhancement of its antibacterial activity and osteoinductivity.

Due to activities like mining and smelting, lead (Pb) enters the atmosphere in various forms in coarse and fine particles. It enters plants mainly through leaves, and goes up the food chain. In this study, PbX (nano-PbS, mic-PbO and PbCl) was applied to eggplant ( L.) leaves, and 379 differential metabolites were identified and analyzed in eggplant leaves using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Multivariate statistical analysis revealed that all three Pb treatments significantly altered the metabolite profile. Compared with nano-PbS, mic-PbO and PbCl induced more identical metabolite changes. However, the alterations in metabolites related to the TCA cycle and pyrimidine metabolism, such as succinic acid, citric acid and cytidine, were specific to PbCl. The number of differential metabolites induced by mic-PbO and PbCl was three times that of nano-PbS, even though the amount of nano-PbS absorbed by leaves was ten times that of PbO and seven times that of PbCl. This suggests that the metabolic response of eggplant leaves to Pb is influenced by both concentration and form. This study enhances the current understanding of plants' metabolic response to Pb, and demonstrates that the metabolomics map provides a more comprehensive view of a plant's response to specific metals.

Deep learning faces a significant bottleneck in medical image analysis due to its reliance on large-scale, expert-annotated datasets. This challenge is acute in ophthalmology, particularly for detecting early-stage diseases like mild Diabetic Retinopathy (DR1), where subtle lesions and a scarcity of annotations limit supervised learning approaches.

A generalizable eye disease detection method based on Zero-Shot Learning.

Under alkaline conditions, most commonly used preservatives exhibit limited efficacy and fail to meet the preservation requirements of coated tofu. This study aims to investigate the effects of metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) on quality deterioration, protein oxidation, conformation, and gel microstructure of coated tofu during cold storage (4 °C and 10 °C). The results showed that, compared with the untreated control group, MPNs treatment effectively inhibited protein oxidation, alleviated quality deterioration, delayed the degradation of color and texture, and reduced protein degradation, as evidenced by soluble protein contents that were 63.55% (4 °C) and 66.65% (10 °C) lower than those of the control group after 20 days of storage. MPNs treatment also improved the orderliness and stability of the protein secondary structure. In addition, electrophoretic analysis showed that MPNs markedly retarded the decline in band optical density of the 11S protein A subunit by 96.19% and 97.28% at 4 °C and 10 °C, respectively, and suppressed the increase in the B subunit by 13.28% and 73.20%, respectively. Moreover, MPNs treatment helped maintain a more compact gel network. Based on physicochemical characterization and Pearson correlation analysis, the preservative effect of MPNs on coated tofu under alkaline conditions was elucidated, revealing the internal correlation between the inhibition of quality deterioration and the regulation of protein oxidation. Specifically, MPNs mitigate protein disulfide bond loss, increase the β-sheet content, preserve the natural protein conformation and the relative proportion of 11S subunits, stabilize the gel microstructure, and thereby achieve quality preservation. These findings provide theoretical support and strategic reference for the development of preservation technologies for alkaline high-protein gel foods.
