Atemwegserkrankungen und Armen Lamm Rekrutierung wurden identifiziert als Faktoren f&uuml;r Dickhornschaf Populationen zu begrenzen. Haemophilus Somnus (vor kurzem als Histophilus Somni umgegliedert) ist Atemwegserkrankungen in amerikanischer Bison, inl&auml;ndische Schafe und Rinder zugeordnet. Es ist auch in ihrer reproduktiven Traktate hegten und reproduktive Fehler in inl&auml;ndische Schafe und Rinder zugeordnet wurde. Daher wurden Fortpflanzungsorgane und Lunge Proben aus Dickhornschaf auf das Vorhandensein von diesem Organismus ausgewertet. Organismen, die als H. Somnus identifiziert wurden aus 6 von 62 vaginal aber nichts von 12 preputialen Tupferproben isoliert. Antigen spezifisch f&uuml;r H. Somnus war Immunohistochemical Studie in 4 von 12 Formalin-&ouml;rtlich Lunge Gewebeproben von Dickhornschaf entdeckt, die mit beweisen an einer Lungenentz&uuml;ndung starb. Insbesondere fand H. Somnus alveol&auml;re Tr&uuml;mmer in Bereichen der Entz&uuml;ndung. Die 6 vaginale isoliert und 2 H. Somnus Isolate vorher kultiviert aus pneumonic Lungen Bighorn Schafe waren im Vergleich mit 3 repr&auml;sentative Isolate aus HAUSSCHAFE und 2 vom Rind. Die Profile der wichtigsten &auml;u&szlig;eren Membranproteine und Antigene aller Isolate waren &uuml;berwiegend &auml;hnlich, obgleich Unterschiede, die Wirt-Parasit-Beziehungen und Virulenz zugeordnet m&ouml;glicherweise erkannt wurden. Die DNA Beschr&auml;nkung Fragment L&auml;nge Profile der Dickhornschafe Isolate hatte &Auml;hnlichkeiten nicht gemeinsam mit anderen Isolate, was auf unterschiedliche phylogenetische Linien. Alle Isolate hatten &auml;hnliche antimikrobielle Profile, aber die Isolate aus das Dickhornschaf produziert weniger Pigment als die vom inl&auml;ndischen Vieh und Wachstum der ehemaligen wurde nicht durch CO2 verbessert. Respiratory disease and poor lamb recruitment have been identified as limiting factors for bighorn-sheep populations. Haemophilus somnus (recently reclassified as Histophilus somni) is associated with respiratory disease in American bison, domestic sheep, and cattle. It is also harbored in their reproductive tracts and has been associated with reproductive failure in domestic sheep and cattle. Therefore, reproductive tract and lung samples from bighorn sheep were evaluated for the presence of this organism. Organisms identified as H. somnus were isolated from 6 of 62 vaginal but none of 12 preputial swab samples. Antigen specific to H. somnus was detected by immunohistochemical study in 4 of 12 formalin-fixed lung tissue samples of bighorn sheep that died with evidence of pneumonia. Notably, H. somnus was found in alveolar debris in areas of inflammation. The 6 vaginal isolates and 2 H. somnus isolates previously cultured from pneumonic lungs of bighorn sheep were compared with 3 representative isolates from domestic sheep and 2 from cattle. The profiles of major outer membrane proteins and antigens for all of the isolates were predominantly similar, although differences that may be associated with the host-parasite relationship and virulence were detected. The DNA restriction fragment length profiles of the bighorn-sheep isolates had similarities not shared with the other isolates, suggesting distinct phylogenetic lines. All of the isolates had similar antimicrobial profiles, but the isolates from the bighorn sheep produced less pigment than those from the domestic livestock, and growth of the former was not enhanced by CO2. Wildlife biologists and diagnosticians should be aware of the potential of these organisms to cause disease in bighorn sheep and of growth characteristics that may hinder laboratory detection.

Les 6 vaginale isole et isolats de 2 H. somnus pr&eacute;c&eacute;demment cultiv&eacute;es des pneumonique poumons de bighorn moutons ont &eacute;t&eacute; compar&eacute;s avec 3 isolats repr&eacute;sentatifs de moutons domestiques et 2 provenant de bovins. Les profils des prot&eacute;ines de membrane externe majeur et antig&egrave;nes pour tous les isolats &eacute;taient essentiellement semblables, bien que les diff&eacute;rences qui peuvent &ecirc;tre associ&eacute;es &agrave; la relation h&ocirc;te-parasite et la virulence ont &eacute;t&eacute; d&eacute;tect&eacute;s. Les profils ADN restriction fragment longueur des isolats mouflon avaient des similitudes non partag&eacute;es avec les autres isolats, sugg&eacute;rant des lign&eacute;es phylog&eacute;n&eacute;tiques distinctes. Las enfermedades respiratorias y reclutamiento de cordero pobres han sido identificados como limitantes para las poblaciones de borrego cimarr&oacute;n. Haemophilus somnus (recientemente reclasificada como Histophilus somni) se asocia con enfermedad respiratoria en bovinos, ovejas dom&eacute;sticas y Bisonte americano. Tambi&eacute;n se albergaba en su tracto reproductivo y se ha asociado con fallas reproductivas en ovinos dom&eacute;sticos y ganado. Por lo tanto, tracto reproductivo y muestras de pulm&oacute;n de borrego cimarr&oacute;n fueron evaluadas para la presencia de este organismo. Organismos identificados como H. somnus se aislaron de 6 de 62 vaginal pero ninguna de las 12 muestras de hisopo prepucial. Ant&iacute;geno espec&iacute;fico de H. somnus fue detectado por inmunohistoqu&iacute;mica en 4 de 12 muestras de tejido pulmonar fijados con formol de borrego cimarr&oacute;n que muri&oacute; con evidencia de neumon&iacute;a. En particular, H. somnus se encontr&oacute; en escombros alveolar en &aacute;reas de la inflamaci&oacute;n. Los 6 vaginal aislantes y aislamientos de 2 H. somnus previamente cultivan de pulmones neum&oacute;nicos de Borrego ovejas fueron comparados con 3 aislamientos representativos de ovejas dom&eacute;sticas y 2 de ganado. Los perfiles de prote&iacute;nas de membrana externa importante y ant&iacute;genos para todos los aislamientos fueron predominante similares, aunque se detectaron diferencias que pueden estar asociadas con la relaci&oacute;n hu&eacute;sped-par&aacute;sito y virulencia. Los perfiles de ADN de longitud de fragmento de restricci&oacute;n de los aislamientos de borregos ten&iacute;an semejanzas no compartidas con los otros aislantes, sugiriendo distintas l&iacute;neas filogen&eacute;ticas. Todos los aislamientos ten&iacute;an perfiles antimicrobianos similares, pero los aislamientos de borregos producci&oacute;n menos pigmento que las de los animales dom&eacute;sticos, y crecimiento del anterior no fue realzada por el CO2. Diagnosticadores y bi&oacute;logos de la vida silvestre deben ser conscientes del potencial de estos organismos que causan enfermedades en el borrego cimarr&oacute;n y de caracter&iacute;sticas de crecimiento que pueden dificultar la detecci&oacute;n de laboratorio.

Biology laboratory classes are designed to teach concepts and techniques through experiential learning. Students who have never performed a technique must be guided through the process, which is often difficult to standardize across multiple lab sections. Visual demonstration of laboratory procedures is a key element in teaching pedagogy. The main goals of the study were to create videos explaining and demonstrating a variety of lab techniques that would serve as teaching tools for undergraduate and graduate lab courses and to assess the impact of these videos on student learning. Demonstrations of individual laboratory procedures were videotaped and then edited with iMovie. Narration for the videos was edited with Audacity. Undergraduate students were surveyed anonymously prior to and following screening to assess the impact of the videos on student lab performance by completion of two Participant Perception Indicator surveys. A total of 203 and 171 students completed the pre- and posttesting surveys, respectively. Statistical analyses were performed to compare student perceptions of knowledge of, confidence in, and experience with the lab techniques before and after viewing the videos. Eleven demonstrations were recorded. Chi-square analysis revealed a significant increase in the number of students reporting increased knowledge of, confidence in, and experience with the lab techniques after viewing the videos. Incorporation of instructional videos as prelaboratory exercises has the potential to standardize techniques and to promote successful experimental outcomes.

Virtual lab demonstrations improve students' mastery of basic biology laboratory techniques.

The completely online Master of Science in Bioinformatics program differs from the onsite program only in the mode of content delivery. Analysis of student satisfaction indicates no statistically significant difference between most online and onsite student responses, however, online and onsite students do differ significantly in their responses to a few questions on the course evaluation queries. Analysis of student exam performance using three assessments indicates that there was no significant difference in grades earned by students in online and onsite courses. These results suggest that our model for online bioinformatics education provides students with a rigorous course of study that is comparable to onsite course instruction and possibly provides a more rigorous course load and more opportunities for participation.
