Double Taxation

Double taxation is the taxation of the same income, transaction, or economic activity more than once, creating a significant concern in accounting and tax administration. It can arise juridically when the same taxpayer faces tax on identical income in two jurisdictions, or economically when corporate profits are taxed at the company level and again as shareholder dividends; cross-border cases often involve residence and source-country claims. Tax treaties, foreign tax credits, exemptions, and deductions help reduce or eliminate these overlapping liabilities. Understanding double taxation supports accurate tax provision calculations, financial reporting, compliance, and informed evaluation of international business structures.
