Cognitive Skills

Cognitive skills are mental abilities that support how people acquire, process, store, and use information, shaping behavior across everyday and social contexts. They include attention, perception, memory, language, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making, which work together to interpret stimuli, evaluate options, and guide goal-directed actions. Researchers assess these skills through behavioral tasks that measure accuracy, reaction time, learning, or flexible responses under defined conditions. Studying cognitive skills helps explain individual differences in behavior, identify changes associated with development or neurological conditions, and inform education, rehabilitation, and psychological research.

Source: Laboratories of Nicholaus Noles and Judith Danovitch—University of Louisville One of the goals of the modern education system is to teach children mathematical literacy. They are taught to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, and this base knowledge is used to support learning about geometry, algebra, calculus, physics, and statistics. School-aged children usually acquire these skills in formal educational settings, but the foundation of mathematical understanding is developed much...

An Introduction to Cognition

2023

Cognition encompasses mental processes such as memory, perception, decision-making reasoning and language. Cognitive scientists are using a combination of behavioral and neuropsychological techniques to investigate the underlying neural substrates of cognition. They are interested in understanding how information is perceived, processed and how does it affect the final execution of behaviors. With this knowledge, researchers hope to develop new treatments for individuals with cognitive...

Children who have complex communication needs can benefit from the use of a speech-generating device (SGD). Cognitive skills were identified as having an impact on the ability to navigate between levels of SGDs. This protocol describes the steps needed for Speech-language Pathologists to assess cognitive skills and navigational abilities.
