Neuromuscular Recording Platforms

Neuromuscular recording platforms are integrated systems that measure electrical and mechanical signals from nerves and muscles to characterize how the motor system produces behavior. They typically combine electromyography, nerve recordings, motion tracking, and behavioral monitoring, synchronizing neural activity with muscle activation, movement, and external stimuli over time. These platforms help researchers link motor-unit recruitment and neuromuscular coordination to actions such as locomotion, grasping, and reflexive responses. In behavioral neuroscience, they support studies of motor control, sensorimotor integration, disease-related dysfunction, and treatment effects, while enabling quantitative comparisons across individuals, experimental conditions, and stages of learning.

Application of electrophysiology to accessible synapses provides a quantifiable measure of synaptic activity, useful in analyzing synaptic mutants. This article describes a dissection method used to expose the neuromuscular junctions (NMJ) of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) and briefly discusses some of the uses to which this preparation can be applied.

Assessing a Functional Neuromuscular Junction Via Simultaneous Optical Stimulation and Video Recording

2025

This video demonstrates a method to assess functional neuromuscular junctions. Using a bioreactor containing muscle tissue and motor neurons, along with fluorescent microscopy, the light-sensitive channels in the neurons are stimulated to generate electrical signals, causing muscle fiber contractions.

Recording Synaptic Currents at the Drosophila Larval Neuromuscular Junction

2025

This video demonstrates the technique for recording synaptic currents from a synaptic bouton at the Drosophila larva's neuromuscular junction. This technique enables monitoring the activity of a single synaptic bouton, which is important for the study of mutant fly lines with enhanced spontaneous or asynchronous synaptic activity.

Assessing Muscle Contraction with Neuromuscular Blocker Treatment

This video demonstrates assessing the muscle using cultured motor neurons, Schwann cells, and myotubes, followed by treatment with a neuromuscular blocker to inhibit contraction. Color-coded time-motion graphics show a color-coded time-motion graphic. Red indicates the fastest movement, and blue indicates the slowest.

A functional assessment of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) can provide essential information on the communication between muscle and nerve. Here we describe a protocol to comprehensively evaluate both the NMJ and muscle functionality using two different muscle-nerve preparations, i.e. soleus-sciatic and diaphragm-phrenic.
