Sensory Evaluation Methodology

Sensory evaluation methodology is a structured set of methods for measuring how people detect, describe, discriminate, and respond to sensory stimuli, making subjective experience suitable for behavioral research. It uses controlled presentation conditions, standardized instructions, trained or untrained panels, and rating tools such as hedonic scales, intensity scales, and preference tests to link observable responses with stimulus properties. In behavior research, these procedures help quantify perception, choice, and individual differences while reducing bias and improving reproducibility.

What is a Sensory System?

2019

Sensory systems detect stimuli—such as light and sound waves—and transduce them into neural signals that can be interpreted by the nervous system. In addition to external stimuli detected by the senses, some sensory systems detect internal stimuli—such as the proprioceptors in muscles and tendons that send feedback about limb position. Sensory systems include the visual, auditory, gustatory (taste), olfactory (smell), somatosensory (touch, pain, temperature, and proprioception), and vestibular...

Source:Tracey A. Milligan, MD; Tamara B. Kaplan, MD; Neurology, Brigham and Women's/Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, USA A complete sensory examination consists of testing primary sensory modalities as well as cortical sensory function. Primary sensory modalities include pain, temperature, light touch, vibration, and joint position sense. Sensation of the face is discussed in the videos Cranial Nerves Exam I and II, as are the special senses of smell, vision, taste, and...

Introduction to New Approach Methodologies (NAMs)

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. New approach methodologies (NAMs) are innovative scientific approaches that generate biological data while reducing reliance on traditional vertebrate animal models. As part of the broader effort to implement the principles of...
