Glass Filter Cartridge

A glass filter cartridge is a housing that contains a porous glass filtration medium, allowing liquids or gases to pass while retaining suspended particles. During filtration, pressure or vacuum drives the sample through interconnected pores, where particles are captured by surface screening and entrapment within the glass matrix; performance depends on pore structure, flow conditions, and sample composition. In biochemistry, these cartridges support clarification of buffers, cell lysates, and other laboratory solutions before downstream analysis or purification. By reducing particulate contamination and protecting chromatography or analytical systems, they improve sample handling and help produce more consistent experimental results.

We describe a protocol for filtration of water samples with a filter cartridge and extraction of environmental DNA (eDNA) without having to cut open the housing to remove the filter. This protocol is developed for metabarcoding eDNA from fishes, but is also applicable to eDNA from other organisms.

Glass Wool Filters for Concentrating Waterborne Viruses and Agricultural Zoonotic Pathogens

Glass wool filters have been used to concentrate waterborne viruses by a number of research groups around the world. Here we show a simple approach for constructing glass wool filters and demonstrate the filters are also effective in concentrating waterborne viral, bacterial and protozoan pathogens.

A Microfluidic Cartridge-Based Detection System for Allergen-Specific Immunoglobulin E

This video demonstrates a protocol for detecting serum-specific immunoglobulin E using a microfluidic cartridge-based chemiluminescence system. Serum IgEs interact with distinct allergens immobilized in the reaction zone of the cartridge, which are subsequently detected with peroxidase-conjugated anti-IgE antibodies and a chemiluminescent substrate, allowing simultaneous detection of multiple allergen-specific IgEs.

The Looking Glass Self

2025

The concept of the looking-glass self describes how an individual's self-concept is shaped by their perception of how others see them. This psychological theory, first introduced by sociologist Charles Horton Cooley in 1902, posits that self-identity emerges in a social context and is influenced by the judgments—real or imagined—of others.Research suggests that individuals frequently overestimate how positively others perceive them. This is particularly evident in physical self-perception,...
