Continuous Medium Perfusion

Continuous medium perfusion is a bioreactor culture strategy that continuously supplies fresh nutrient medium while removing spent fluid, helping maintain stable conditions for engineered tissues and cells. A pump or pressure-driven system moves medium through a cell-containing chamber or scaffold at a controlled flow rate, supporting nutrient delivery, oxygen transport, and waste removal while limiting accumulation of inhibitory metabolites. In bioengineering, this approach can improve cell viability, proliferation, and tissue maturation compared with static culture. It is used in three-dimensional tissue models, organ-on-chip systems, and regenerative medicine research, where precise control of the cellular microenvironment is essential.

Langendorff Retrograde Heart Perfusion: An Ex Vivo Technique to Perfuse Isolated Mouse Heart

2025

In this video, we perform Langendorff retrograde perfusion of an isolated mouse heart. During the procedure, the cardiac activity of the heart is maintained by perfusing it retrogradely with a perfusion solution via the coronary arteries using a cannula inserted into the ascending aorta. The model is used to study the cardiac pathophysiology of the heart.

A liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) system involving hollow-fiber membranes was developed to continuously and selectively extract medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) from the fermentation broth. The LLE system achieves high MCFA specificities from broths containing short-chain fatty acids and alcohols. Also, MCFAs are concentrated in a stripping solution to facilitate product recovery.

Antegrade Perfusion Model: An Ex Vivo Technique to Perfuse Isolated Mouse Heart

This video describes an antegrade perfusion technique of an isolated mouse heart during which a perfusate is injected through the left ventricle, and eventually, it perfuses the entire myocardium. This method can be used to isolate cardiomyocytes from murine models and generate decellularized hearts for further downstream applications.
