Noninvasive Imaging

Noninvasive imaging is the visualization of internal structures, functions, or processes without surgically entering or removing tissue, making it valuable for repeated measurements in biology and medicine. These methods transmit or detect signals at the body surface, such as sound waves, magnetic responses, light, or radiation, and use differences in tissue properties to generate images through signal processing and computational reconstruction. In bioengineering, noninvasive imaging supports biomaterial evaluation, tissue and organ characterization, device development, and monitoring of disease or therapy over time. It can reduce procedural risk while producing quantitative data for diagnosis, research, and personalized treatment design.

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...

(2019)This video demonstrates a non-invasive ophthalmic drug delivery method for targeted neuromodulation. The drug is delivered via eye drops, absorbed into the circulation, crosses the blood-brain barrier, and activates specific neuronal receptors.

2025

This study introduces a novel approach for real-time cardiac mapping using a noninvasive, imageless electrocardiographic imaging system. This system enables the acquisition of electrophysiological cardiac maps without requiring pre-procedural computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging scans, enabling efficient guidance for cardiac procedures such as ablation and cardiac resynchronization therapy implants.

In this study, the use of an in situ loading device coupled with micro-X-ray computed tomography for fibrous joint biomechanics will be discussed. Experimental readouts identifiable with an overall change in joint biomechanics will include: 1) reactionary force vs. displacement, i.e. tooth displacement within the alveolar socket and its reactionary response to loading, 2) three-dimensional (3D) spatial configuration and morphometrics, i.e. geometric relationship of the tooth with the alveolar...
