Polymeric Dispersion

Polymeric dispersion is a colloidal system in which polymer particles are distributed throughout a continuous liquid phase, creating a stable material with tunable physical and chemical properties. Stability typically depends on particle size, surface charge, steric barriers, and interactions with dispersing agents that limit aggregation, while preparation methods such as emulsion or nanoprecipitation control particle formation. In bioengineering, polymeric dispersions support drug delivery, tissue-engineering scaffolds, biosensors, and protective coatings by enabling controlled transport, surface modification, and biocompatible formulation. Their composition and stability influence storage, processing, cellular interactions, and therapeutic performance.

Source: Vy M. Dong and Jan Riedel, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Polymers are made from macromolecules, which are composed of repeating units (the so called monomeric units). In our modern world, polymers play an important role. One of the first important polymers was nylon, which is a polyamide. It found widespread application in tooth brushes and stockings.

Detection of Biofilm Disassembly Through a Dispersion Assay

2025

The video showcases a biofilm dispersion assay using a multi-well plate. Buffer and glucose treatment disassemble the biofilm, releasing bacteria, while bile salts induce stress, retaining bacteria in the protective extracellular polymeric substance. Higher dispersion with buffer and glucose confirms successful biofilm disassembly, estimated by colony forming units measurement.

Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with their environment and with one another. An important aspect of ecology is understanding where species are found and how individuals are distributed within those areas. The geographic range of a species refers to the total area where its members are located, while dispersion describes the pattern of spacing of individuals within that range.Geographic Range and Dispersion PatternsWithin a species’ geographic range, individuals may be distributed...
