Nanostructured Metal Oxides

Nanostructured metal oxides are metal-oxygen compounds engineered with features at the nanometer scale, where size and structure produce properties distinct from their bulk forms. Their high surface-area-to-volume ratio, tunable porosity, surface reactivity, and electronic or optical behavior enable controlled interactions with biological molecules and cells. In bioengineering, materials such as titanium, zinc, iron, and silicon oxides support biosensors, antimicrobial coatings, imaging platforms, drug delivery, and tissue-engineering scaffolds. By adjusting particle size, morphology, composition, and surface chemistry, researchers can regulate biocompatibility, catalytic activity, molecular binding, and cellular responses, advancing diagnostic, therapeutic, and regenerative technologies.

We present a method to control the interfacial energy of a liquid metal in an electrolyte via electrochemical deposition (or removal) of a surface oxide layer. This simple method can control the capillary behavior of gallium-based liquid metals by tuning the interfacial energy rapidly, significantly, and reversibly using modest voltages.
