Attachment Glycoprotein

An attachment glycoprotein is a carbohydrate-containing protein on a cell or virus that recognizes and binds specific molecules on another cell, making it central to cell adhesion, communication, and viral entry. In many viruses, the glycoprotein engages a host-cell receptor through complementary molecular interactions, which can induce structural changes that position or activate other proteins required for membrane fusion and genome delivery. Studying these interactions helps researchers understand host range, tissue tropism, and infection mechanisms. Attachment glycoproteins also provide important targets for vaccines, antiviral drugs, diagnostic assays, and investigations of how pathogens evolve to recognize new hosts.

Attachment

Attachment is vital for infant development, as warm social interactions support growth and well-being. In a classic 1958 study by Harry Harlow, the significance of warmth and comfort in forming attachments was examined. Harlow separated newborn monkeys from their mothers and provided two artificial "mothers": one made of cold wire and the other covered in soft cloth. Despite the wire mother offering food, the infant monkeys preferred the comfort of the cloth mother, demonstrating that physical...

Using a Sandwich ELISA to Determine the Immunogenic Glycoprotein Content in a Vaccine

2025

This video showcases an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or ELISA sandwich immunocapture assay designed to assess immunogenic glycoprotein levels in vaccines. The assay plate, containing glycoprotein-specific antibodies, is incubated with serially diluted vaccine samples, including reference and test vaccines, followed by immunoassay to quantify glycoprotein content in the test vaccine.

A Viral Attachment Assay for Screening of Antiviral Compounds

This video demonstrates a viral attachment assay for screening antiviral compounds. Using genetically modified hepatitis C virus and luciferase, it assesses inhibitory effects on viral attachment, as indicated by lower light intensity in co-treated wells compared to wells treated with the virus alone.

Microscopy-Based Evaluation of Bacterial Attachment to Plant Root Surfaces

Source: Matthysse, A. G. Adherence of Bacteria to Plant Surfaces Measured in the Laboratory. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the evaluation of bacterial attachment to plant roots using phase-contrast microscopy. Root samples from seedlings incubated with bacteria are first mounted to check for free bacteria. The samples are then washed to remove loosely attached bacteria and remounted using a suitable coverslip to prevent damage. Finally, the number of bacteria attached to the root...
