Bar Magnet Enrichment

Bar magnet enrichment is a simple biological method for concentrating magnetotactic microorganisms from environmental samples or cultures based on their response to magnetic fields. These bacteria contain magnetosomes, membrane-bound magnetic particles that align within Earth’s magnetic field and guide cell movement along field lines; placing a bar magnet beside a sample causes magnetically responsive cells to accumulate near the magnet. Researchers can then collect or transfer the enriched fraction for microscopy, cultivation, and further study of magnetotaxis, magnetosome formation, and microbial ecology. The method provides an accessible first step for isolating organisms whose magnetic behavior supports navigation in aquatic environments.

Bar Graph

A bar graph is also called a bar chart and consists of bars that are separated from each other. It either uses horizontal or vertical bars to show comparisons among categories. The bars can be rectangles, or they can be rectangular boxes (used in three-dimensional plots). One axis of the graph represents the specific categories being compared, and the other axis shows a discrete value. In this graph, the length of the bar for each category is proportional to the number or percent of individuals...

This protocol details the use of Hopkinson pressure bars to measure reflected blast loading from near-field explosive events. It is capable of interpolating a pressure-time history at any point on a reflective boundary and as such can be used to fully characterize the spatial and temporal variations in loading produced.

Multiple Bar Graph

As the name suggests, a multiple bar graph is the same as a bar graph but has multiple bars to depict relationships between different data values. One can include as many parameters as possible. However, each parameter must have the same unit of measurement. Each bar or column in the multiple bar graph represents a data value. These graphs are used primarily in interrelating two or more sets of data. The categories of different kinds of data are listed along the horizontal or x-axis, whereas...

Collection, Isolation and Enrichment of Naturally Occurring Magnetotactic Bacteria from the Environment

We demonstrate a method to collect magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) that can be applied to natural waters. MTB can be isolated and enriched from sediment samples using a relatively simple setup that takes advantage of the bacteria's natural magnetism. Isolated MTB can then be examined in detail using both light and electron microscopy.
