Dejellying Procedure

Dejellying is a biological preparation procedure that removes the extracellular jelly coat surrounding an egg, making the cell surface accessible for observation and experimental manipulation. In practice, eggs are exposed briefly to a controlled chemical or enzymatic treatment that loosens or dissolves the jelly without damaging the plasma membrane, then washed to restore suitable conditions. In developmental biology, dejellying supports studies of fertilization, sperm–egg interactions, cortical reactions, and early embryonic development by improving microscopic visibility and allowing researchers to control contact between gametes. Careful timing and treatment conditions are essential because excessive exposure can compromise egg viability and subsequent development.

Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. Ensuring their welfare is both an ethical responsibility and essential for scientific validity. There are general procedures that apply to the majority of these mice and rats, but some of the animals, such as the immunocompromised ones, require additional steps to be taken to sustain them for...
