Embryo Implantation

Embryo implantation is the process by which a developing embryo attaches to and becomes embedded within the uterine lining, establishing the foundation for pregnancy. After the blastocyst reaches the uterus, its outer cells adhere to receptive endometrial tissue and differentiate into trophoblast cells that invade the lining and contribute to the placenta. Coordinated signaling between the embryo and endometrium regulates attachment, immune tolerance, and the formation of maternal blood supply. Studying embryo implantation helps explain early development, infertility, miscarriage, and complications such as ectopic pregnancy, while supporting advances in assisted reproductive technologies and reproductive biology.
