Eukaryote-first Hypothesis

The eukaryote-first hypothesis is an evolutionary proposal that places eukaryotes, cells with nuclei and membrane-bound organelles, near the beginning of cellular history rather than as descendants of simpler prokaryotic lineages. It is evaluated by comparing genes, cellular structures, and molecular phylogenies to infer ancestral relationships, including whether features such as the nucleus and mitochondria arose early or through later symbiotic events. This hypothesis challenges conventional models of eukaryotic origins and informs research on the last universal common ancestor, endosymbiosis, and the early diversification of life. Testing it helps refine evolutionary trees and clarify how complex cells emerged.

The Eukaryotic Promoter Region

2020

The eukaryotic promoter region is a segment of DNA located upstream of a gene. It contains an RNA polymerase binding site, a transcription start site, and several cis-regulatory sequences. The proximal promoter region is located in the vicinity of the gene and has cis-regulatory sequences and the core promoter. The core promoter is the binding site for RNA polymerase and is usually located between -35 and +35 nucleotides from the transcription start site. The distal promoter regions are...

Eukaryotic RNA Polymerases

2025

RNA Polymerase (RNAP) is conserved in all animals, with bacterial, archaeal, and eukaryotic RNAPs sharing significant sequence, structural, and functional similarities. Among the three eukaryotic RNAPs, RNA Polymerase II is most similar to bacterial RNAP in terms of both structural organization and folding topologies of the enzyme subunits. However, these similarities are not reflected in their mechanism of action. All three eukaryotic RNAPs require specific transcription factors, of which the...

What is a Hypothesis?

2023

A hypothesis can be a simple sentence or statement about a property or any phenomenon observed or predicted for a population. It is usually a claim about a property of the population. It can be stated for any field observations or experiments. A hypothesis statement cannot be said to be right or wrong as it is merely a statement. It needs to be tested through an elaborate data collection process and an appropriate statistical test. A hypothesis should be a general but not a vague statement. It...

Here we describe a protocol using the web-based drug repurposing hypothesis generation tool: "RE:fine Drugs." This protocol can be modified to a user's preferences at the level of the query type (gene, drug or disease) and/or the range of available advanced options.

The Tree of Life - Bacteria, Archaea, Eukaryotes

2020

The “tree of life” describes the evolution of life and the evolutionary relationships between organisms. The root of the tree is the common ancestor to all life on Earth. All other species radiate from this point, much like the branches of a tree. The numerous tips of these branches on the tree of life represent every living, or extant, species. Extinct species, which are species that no longer exist, can be found towards the center of the tree. Currently, these organisms, both extant and...
