Larval Head

The larval head is the anterior body region of an animal larva, containing structures that support feeding, sensation, movement, and early environmental interaction. During development, coordinated cell division, tissue differentiation, and body-axis patterning organize neural tissue, sensory organs, mouthparts, and supporting muscles into a functional region. Its form varies widely among insects, mollusks, fish, and other animals, reflecting each larva’s habitat and lifestyle. Studying the larval head helps biologists link developmental processes with anatomy, behavior, evolution, and metamorphosis, while providing a framework for examining how juvenile structures are remodeled or replaced as organisms mature.

Drosophila Larval IHC

2023

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a technique used to visualize the presence and location of proteins within tissues. Drosophila larvae are particularly amenable to IHC because of the ease with which they can be processed for staining. Additionally, the larvae are transparent, meaning that some tissues can be visualized without the need for dissection. In IHC, proteins are ultimately detected with antibodies that specifically bind to “epitopes” within the protein of interest. In order to preserve...

2013

A simple method to record extracellular field potentials in the larval zebrafish forebrain is described. The method provides a robust in vivo read-out of seizure-like activity. This technique can be used with genetically modified zebrafish larvae carrying epilepsy-related genes or seizures evoked by administration of convulsant drugs.

Drosophila melanogaster larvae provide an ideal model system to investigate the mechanisms of axonal transport within larval segmental nerves. Using this procedure, 3rd instar larvae carrying various mutations can be compared to wild type larvae.

Development of a Zebrafish Larval Infection Model Using Microgavage

Source: Li, J., et al. Development of a Larval Zebrafish Infection Model for Clostridioides difficile. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates the microgavage procedure, where an anesthetized zebrafish larva is immobilized in agarose and orally injected with a pathogenic bacterium using a tracer-guided needle. The non-invasive delivery mimics natural infection, enabling analysis of bacterial replication, toxin release, and intestinal epithelial damage.
