Motor Symptoms

Motor symptoms are observable changes in voluntary or involuntary movement, including weakness, tremor, rigidity, slowed motion, and impaired coordination, that indicate altered function within the motor system. Movement depends on coordinated signaling among the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junctions, and skeletal muscles; disruption at any point can change muscle activation, force, timing, or posture. In biology and neuroscience, analyzing motor symptoms helps researchers connect behavior with neural circuits and cellular dysfunction. These observations support the study of conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and neuromuscular disorders, while informing diagnosis, disease monitoring, and evaluation of potential treatments.

Source: Tendler, A., et al. How to Use the H1 Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Coil for Conditions Other than Depression. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the use of deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) to alleviate symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. It begins by identifying reduced activity in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) as a key factor contributing to the overactivation of the amygdala and heightened fear responses. By applying targeted...

DC Motors

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. The DC machine operates with DC currents and voltages as opposed to an AC machine, which requires AC currents and voltages. DC machines were the first to be invented and utilize two magnetic fields that are controlled by DC currents. The same machine can be easily reconfigured to be a motor or generator if appropriate field excitation is available, since the DC machine has two fields termed field...

Motor Maps

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California One principle of brain organization is the topographic mapping of information. Especially in sensory and motor cortices, adjacent regions of the brain tend to represent information from adjacent parts of the body, resulting in maps of the body expressed on the surface of the brain. The primary sensory and motor maps in the brain surround a prominent sulcus known as the central sulcus. The cortex...
