Preclinical Imaging

Preclinical imaging is the noninvasive visualization and measurement of biological structure and function in laboratory animals or experimental models before clinical testing, helping researchers evaluate disease processes and potential therapies. It uses modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, ultrasound, optical imaging, and positron emission tomography, each detecting different physical signals to produce anatomical, molecular, or physiological information over time. In biology, these methods enable longitudinal studies of tumor growth, organ function, drug distribution, and treatment response while reducing the need to sacrifice animals at each time point. By linking biological mechanisms with measurable outcomes, preclinical imaging supports translational research and improves the selection of promising interventions for human studies.

The combination of multiple imaging modalities is often necessary to gain a comprehensive understanding of pathophysiology. This approach utilizes phantoms to generate a differential transformation between the coordinate systems of two modalities, which is then applied for co-registration. This method eliminates the need for fiducials in production scans.
