Proton Neutron Electron

Protons, neutrons, and electrons are the three primary subatomic particles that define the structure and behavior of atoms, the basic units of biological matter. Protons carry positive charge and determine an element’s atomic number, neutrons provide most of the nucleus’s mass and create isotopes, while electrons occupy regions around the nucleus and govern chemical bonding and ion formation. In biology, these particles explain how atoms combine into molecules such as water, proteins, and DNA, how pH and electrolytes function, and how radioactive isotopes support imaging, tracing, and research into metabolism and cellular processes.

A shear cell is developed for small-angle neutron scattering measurements in the velocity-velocity gradient plane of shear and is used to characterize complex fluids. Spatially resolved measurements in the velocity gradient direction are possible for studying shear-banding materials. Applications include investigations of colloidal dispersions, polymer solutions, and self-assembled structures.

Using Neutron Spin Echo Resolved Grazing Incidence Scattering to Investigate Organic Solar Cell Materials

2014

Progress has been made in utilizing spin echo resolved grazing incidence scattering (SERGIS) as a neutron scattering technique to probe the length-scales in irregular samples. Crystallites of [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester have been probed using the SERGIS technique and the results confirmed by optical and atomic force microscopy.

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University The United States consumes a large amount of energy – the current rate is around 97.5 quadrillion BTUs annually. The vast majority (90%) of this energy comes from non-renewable fuel sources. This energy is used for electricity (39%), transportation (28%), industry (22%), and residential/commercial use (11%). As the world has a limited supply of these non-renewable sources, the United States (among others) is...
