Sodium Hydrosulfide Standard

Sodium Hydrosulfide Standard is a reference solution containing a known amount of sodium hydrosulfide, used to calibrate instruments and validate analytical methods for sulfide measurement. In aqueous systems, sodium hydrosulfide establishes an equilibrium between hydrosulfide ions (HS⁻) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), with their relative abundance influenced by pH; this behavior is important when preparing or interpreting standards. In biology, the standard supports quantitative analysis of sulfide in samples and experiments involving sulfur metabolism, redox chemistry, and sulfide-mediated cellular signaling, improving measurement accuracy and comparability across studies.

Standard Enthalpy of Formation

2020

Enthalpy changes are typically tabulated for reactions in which both the reactants and products are at the same conditions. A standard state is a commonly accepted set of conditions used as a reference point for the determination of properties under other different conditions. For chemists, the IUPAC standard state refers to materials under a pressure of 1 bar and solutions at 1 M and does not specify a temperature. Many thermochemical tables list values with a standard state of 1 atm. Because...

Regulation of Sodium and Potassium

2024

The regulation of sodium and potassium ion concentrations in the human body is a complex process governed primarily by hormones such as aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). Sodium Regulation Sodium ions make up approximately 90% of extracellular cations, with a normal blood plasma concentration of 136–148 mEq/L. A decrease in blood volume and pressure triggers the release of renin from granular cells in the juxtaglomerular complex (JGC), primarily in...

Method of Standard Addition

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Paul Bower - Purdue University The method of standard additions is a quantitative analysis method, which is often used when the sample of interest has multiple components that result in matrix effects, where the additional components may either reduce or enhance the analyte absorbance signal. That results in significant errors in the analysis results. Standard additions are commonly used to eliminate matrix effects from a measurement, since it is assumed that the...
