Sterile Cotton Balls

Sterile cotton balls are absorbent, fiber-based laboratory supplies prepared to minimize viable microbial contamination during biological work. Their interwoven cotton fibers take up and hold liquids, while sterile handling helps prevent microorganisms from entering samples, contacting cultures, or contaminating work surfaces. In biology, they support gentle cleaning, specimen collection, liquid application, and coverage of small areas in teaching and research settings. They are useful when disposable absorbent material is needed, but they must remain sealed until use and be discarded after contact with biological materials to preserve aseptic conditions and reduce cross-contamination.

Fabricating Cotton Analytical Devices

2016

To investigate simple fabrication approaches for multiple assay needs, we created a fluid-absorbing channel system made of cotton material. This device was used to establish a multiple detection platform, and solve contamination issues that commonly affect lateral flow-based biomedical devices, for clinical urinalysis of nitrite, total protein, and urobilinogen.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN In 1959 The 3 R's were introduced by W.M.S. Russell and R.L. Burch in their book The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique. The 3 R's are replacement, reduction, and refinement of the use of animals in research. The use of cell lines and tissue cultures that originated from research animals is a replacement technique, as it allows for many experiments to be conducted in vitro. Harvesting...

Developing Neuron Balls Using a Hanging Drop Culture Technique

We present the detailed protocol for Agrobacterium-mediated virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) assay in cotton. The tobacco rattle virus (TRV)-derived VIGS vectors were deployed to induce RNA silencing of cotton GrCLA1, Cloroplastos alterados 1 gene. The albino phenotype caused by silencing GrCLA1 was observed at the seedling stage within 2 weeks after inoculation.
