Submerged Liquid-phase Bioreactor

A submerged liquid-phase bioreactor is a controlled vessel in which microorganisms, cells, or enzymes grow or carry out biochemical reactions within a liquid nutrient medium. Agitation distributes cells, nutrients, and heat, while aeration supplies oxygen and removes carbon dioxide when aerobic growth is required; sensors and automated controls help regulate pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and mixing. These systems support the production of microbial biomass, enzymes, metabolites, vaccines, and other biological products. In biology and biotechnology, they enable reproducible cultivation at laboratory and industrial scales, while providing a platform for studying growth kinetics, metabolism, process optimization, and bioprocess scale-up.

Liquid Phase Reactor: Sucrose Inversion

2023

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Both batch and continuous flow reactors are used in catalytic reactions. Packed beds, which use solid catalysts and a continuous flow, are the most common configuration. In the absence of an extensive recycle stream, such packed bed reactors are typically modeled as "plug flow". The other most common continuous reactor is a stirred tank, which is assumed to be perfectly...

Fermentors are used to increase culture yield and productivity of bioengineered cells. After screening multiple microbial or animal cell culture candidates in shake flasks, the next logical step is to increase the selected culture’s biomass with the fermentor. This video demonstrates the setup and operation of a typical benchtop bioreactor system.

Phase Diagram Characterization Using Magnetic Beads as Liquid Carriers

2015

Here, we present a protocol to investigate multi-component phase diagrams using externally controlled magnetic beads as liquid carriers in a lab-in-tube approach. This approach can aid in applications that seek to gather further information on phase change in complex liquid systems.

Batch and Continuous Bioreactors

2023

Bioreactors are used to grow organisms in large volumes, thereby enabling the production of mass quantities of the target product. These reactors can be batch reactors, which contain all of the components needed for cell growth, or continuous reactors, which have inlet and outlet ports allowing for the addition of fresh growth media and the removal of cell waste. This video presents batch and continuous reactors and demonstrates the use of bioreactors to grow bacteria in the laboratory.
