Synthetic Rna Oligonucleotides

Synthetic RNA oligonucleotides are short, laboratory-produced RNA sequences designed to bind specific nucleic acid targets, making them useful tools for studying and manipulating gene expression. Their activity depends on complementary base pairing with messenger RNA or other RNA molecules, which can block translation, alter RNA processing, or trigger target degradation depending on sequence design and chemical modification. In biology, these molecules support gene-function studies, RNA interference, antisense research, diagnostics, and therapeutic development. By enabling precise, sequence-directed regulation, synthetic RNA oligonucleotides help researchers investigate cellular pathways and develop strategies for treating genetic and infectious diseases.

2024

Here, a protocol for assaying nucleic acid metabolizing enzymes is presented, using examples of ligase, nuclease, and polymerase enzymes. The assay utilizes fluorescently labeled and unlabeled oligonucleotides that can be combined to form duplexes mimicking RNA and/or DNA damages or pathway intermediates, allowing for the characterization of enzyme behavior.

This video presents synthetic biology and its role in bioengineering. Synthetic biology refers to the methods used to genetically modify organisms in order to make them capable of producing large quantities of a product. This product could be a protein that the cell already makes or a new protein that has been encoded in a newly-inserted DNA sequence. Here, we discuss how an organism's genetic material is modified using transformation or transfection. Then, the process is shown in the...
