Electrical Nerve Stimtration

Electrical nerve stimulation is a technique that uses controlled electrical signals to activate or modulate nerve activity, making it valuable for studying how nervous systems communicate and respond. Applied pulses alter the electrical potential across a nerve membrane, potentially reaching the threshold that triggers action potentials and downstream muscle or sensory responses. In biology, researchers use this method to investigate neural circuits, synaptic function, sensory processing, and neuromuscular control. Carefully adjusting stimulus intensity, duration, and frequency can reveal relationships between electrical input and physiological output, while also supporting research into pain modulation, rehabilitation, and therapies for neurological dysfunction.

We present a protocol to assess changes in neuromuscular function. Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is a non-invasive method that evokes muscular responses. Electrophysiological and mechanical properties of these responses permit the evaluation of neuromuscular function from brain to muscle (supra-spinal, spinal and peripheral levels).

Take an anesthetized rat with an exposed intact right sciatic nerve, which controls leg movement and sensation.Excise a nerve segment, creating a gap, severing the neuronal axons, and disrupting signal transmission. The severed distal axons deteriorate, detaching specialized nerve-repair or Schwann cells.Suture a bionic conductive nerve scaffold, a soft tube with microchannels, to the epineurium, the nerve’s outer layer, at both cut ends.Implant paired electrodes near the nerve ends, passing...

Programmed electrical stimulation provides the ability to determine conduction properties of the heart, and the possibility to induce and terminate cardiac arrhythmias using various pacing protocols. Using a transvenous catheter, intracardiac electrogram recordings can be obtained in mice following programmed electrical stimulation protocols to identify arrhythmogenic substrates.

2012

A murine model of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), a safe and inexpensive clinical modality, to the anterior compartment muscles is described. This model has the advantage of modifying a readily available clinical device for the purpose of eliciting targeted and specific muscle contractions in mice.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation via Chronically Implanted Peripheral Nerve Cuff Electrodes in Rats

Source: Sanchez, C. A., et al. Preparation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Electrodes for Chronic Implantation in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates vagus nerve stimulation in an awake rat. A rat with an implanted chronic peripheral nerve cuff electrode and trained in a lever press task is connected to a stimulus generator via an implanted head cap. The vagus nerve is stimulated immediately after each successful lever press, resulting in the expansion of the motor map.
