Thorax Muscles

Thorax muscles are the skeletal muscles of the chest wall and upper back that support posture, move the upper limbs, and drive breathing. During inspiration, the diaphragm contracts and flattens while the external intercostal muscles elevate the ribs, increasing thoracic volume and lowering pressure so air enters the lungs; internal intercostals assist mainly in forced expiration. This coordinated activity stabilizes the rib cage while respiratory and accessory muscles adjust ventilation during speech, exercise, and changing metabolic demand. Understanding thorax muscles helps students and researchers interpret chest movement, respiratory mechanics, neuromuscular disorders, injury, and clinical assessments of breathing.

Muscles of the Thorax

2024

The thorax muscles are central to the body's respiration and provide essential support and movement for the upper body. They are intricately designed to facilitate the complex breathing process while also contributing to the structural integrity and mobility of the chest and upper limbs. The diaphragm is at the core of thoracic musculature, the primary muscle involved in breathing. This expansive, dome-shaped muscle marks the division between the thoracic and abdominal cavities. It originates...

Veins of Thorax

The azygos system is a crucial part of the body's circulatory system and drains most of the thorax. It comprises the azygos, hemiazygos, and accessory hemiazygos veins. The azygos vein, positioned just right of the midline and anterior to the vertebral column, begins at the junction of the right ascending lumbar and subcostal veins, terminating in the superior vena cava. This vein drains blood from the right side of the thoracic wall, thoracic viscera, and posterior abdominal wall. The...

Dissection of Drosophila melanogaster Indirect Flight Muscles for Microscopy Approaches

2025

Drosophila is a powerful model to understand fundamental mechanisms of myogenesis. This protocol for the dissection and preparation of thorax hemi-sections enables microscopy analysis of indirect flight muscle from both pupal and adult stages. This protocol enables confocal imaging of cellular morphology, protein localization, muscle structure, and multiple other aspects of myogenesis.

We report a method to quantify muscle area, which is an indirect method to determine muscle mass in Drosophila adults. We demonstrate the application of our methodology by analyzing the indirect flight muscles in a Drosophila model of Myotonic Dystrophy disease.

Assessing the Structural Integrity of the Dorsal Longitudinal Muscle Neuromuscular Junctions in Drosophila

2025

This video demonstrates a protocol for assessing the structural integrity of neuromuscular junctions in the dorsal longitudinal muscles of Drosophila. The procedure involves staining neurons and muscles with two distinct antibodies and comparing fluorescence patterns between mutant and wild-type flies. A reduction in neuronal staining in mutant flies indicates neurodegeneration, while the muscle structure remains intact.
