Video Playback Systems

Video playback systems are technologies that decode and display recorded moving images, allowing biological observations to be viewed repeatedly and at controlled speeds. They work by reading encoded video data, reconstructing sequential frames, and presenting those frames with synchronized timing; pause, slow-motion, and frame-by-frame controls can reveal events that occur too quickly or gradually for unaided observation. In biology, these systems support analysis of animal behavior, microscopy recordings, experimental demonstrations, and time-lapse sequences. Reliable playback improves observation, comparison, and documentation, helping researchers examine dynamic processes and communicate methods and results clearly.

Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in mice differ depending on age, sex, condition, and genetic background. Using two ultrasound emitters broadcasting simultaneously in different locations, this two-choice test can evaluate murine recognition and preference responses to different characteristics of USVs.

Cell growth rate is a regulated process and a primary determinant of cell physiology. Continuous culturing using chemostats enables extrinsic control of cell growth rate by nutrient limitation facilitating the study of molecular networks that control cell growth and how those networks evolve to optimize cell growth.

Video-oculography is a very quantitative method to investigate ocular motor performance as well as motor learning. Here, we describe how to measure video-oculography in mice. Applying this technique on normal, pharmacologically-treated or genetically modified mice is a powerful research tool to explore the underlying physiology of motor behaviors.
