Cryoprotectants

Cryoprotectants are substances that protect cells, tissues, and biological samples from damage during freezing, thawing, and cryogenic storage. Compounds such as dimethyl sulfoxide and glycerol reduce ice-crystal formation and help limit osmotic stress by interacting with water and penetrating, or surrounding, cells. In cancer research, cryoprotectants support the preservation of tumor cells, cell lines, organoids, immune cells, and tissue specimens for later analysis or experimentation. Their careful use helps maintain cellular viability and biological characteristics, improving the reproducibility of studies involving cancer models, biobanking, drug testing, and long-term sample storage.
