Chemical Explosion Hazard

Chemical explosion hazard is the risk that a chemical reaction or decomposition will release energy so rapidly that heat, gas, and pressure can cause a blast, fire, or structural damage. It arises when reactive materials, flammable vapors, gases, or combustible dusts undergo rapid oxidation or decomposition, especially in confined spaces where expanding gases cannot escape and pressure rises. Understanding chemical explosion hazard supports safer laboratory and industrial chemistry by guiding compatibility assessments, ventilation, temperature control, storage, and ignition-source management; these measures reduce the likelihood and severity of incidents while informing emergency planning and process design.

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA While the use of various chemicals in experimental research is essential, it is also important to safely store and maintain them as a part of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) program. The properties of chemicals and their reactivity vary broadly and if chemicals are not managed, stored, and labeled properly, they can have harmful or even destructive consequences such as toxic fume...

Developmental testing of high explosives for military applications involves small-scale formulation, safety testing, and finally detonation performance tests to verify theoretical calculations. This paper will share typical development tests associated with the measurement of detonation velocity and detonation pressure.

Minimum Burning Pressures of Water-based Emulsion Explosives

2017

We present an apparatus based on hot-wire ignition in a pressurized enclosure and an associated methodology to measure the minimum pressure required to induce sustained combustion in water-based emulsion explosives. This method improves product characterization to allow one to use them more safely during pumping and mixing operations.

We have developed an eye irritation test which utilizes a three dimensional reconstructed human cornea-like epithelial (RhCE) tissue model. The test is able to discriminate between ocular irritant and corrosive materials (GHS Categories 1 and 2 combined) and those that do not require labeling (GHS No Category).
