Electron Distribution

Electron distribution describes how electrons occupy the energy levels, subshells, and orbitals of an atom or molecule, shaping its chemical behavior. In atoms, electrons fill orbitals according to increasing energy while following the Pauli exclusion principle and Hund’s rule, with their arrangement represented by electron configurations and influenced by quantum numbers. This distribution determines valence electrons, atomic size, ionization energy, and other periodic trends, while also guiding predictions of chemical bonding, reactivity, and magnetic properties. Understanding electron distribution supports molecular structure analysis, spectroscopy, materials chemistry, and the interpretation of reactions across chemistry.

Observing the water distribution within the xylem provides significant information regarding water flow dynamics in woody plants. In this study, we demonstrate the practical approach to observe xylem water distribution in situ by using a cryostat and cryo-SEM, which eliminates artifactual changes in the water status during sample preparation.

A modified post-fixation procedure increases the contrast of glycogen particles in tissue. This paper provides a step-by-step protocol describing how to handle the tissue, conduct the imaging, and use stereological methods to obtain unbiased and quantitative data on fiber type-specific subcellular glycogen distribution in skeletal muscle.

Electron Carriers

2019

Electron carriers can be thought of as electron shuttles. These compounds can easily accept electrons (i.e., be reduced) or lose them (i.e., be oxidized). They play an essential role in energy production because cellular respiration is contingent on the flow of electrons. Over the many stages of cellular respiration, glucose breaks down into carbon dioxide and water. Electron carriers pick up electrons lost by glucose in these reactions, temporarily storing and releasing them into the electron...

Electron Configuration of Multielectron Atoms

The alkali metal sodium (atomic number 11) has one more electron than the neon atom. This electron must go into the lowest-energy subshell available, the 3s orbital, giving a 1s22s22p63s1 configuration. The electrons occupying the outermost shell orbital(s) (highest value of n) are called valence electrons, and those occupying the inner shell orbitals are called core electrons. Since the core electron shells correspond to noble gas electron configurations, we can abbreviate electron...
