Handedness

Handedness is the directional asymmetry of an object or molecule, describing whether it exists as a left- or right-handed form that cannot be superimposed on its mirror image. In chemistry, this property is called chirality and commonly arises when a tetrahedral atom, often carbon, is attached to four different groups, producing enantiomers with identical connectivity but distinct three-dimensional arrangements. Because chiral molecules can interact differently with other chiral molecules, enantiomers may show different odors, biological effects, reactivities, or analytical behavior. Chemists use stereoselective synthesis, chiral separation, and spectroscopy to identify and control handedness in pharmaceuticals, catalysis, materials science, and molecular recognition.

Central and Divided Visual Field Presentation of Emotional Images to Measure Hemispheric Differences in Motivated Attention

2017

This study compared central versus divided visual field presentations of emotional images to assess differences in motivated attention between the two hemispheres. The late positive potential (LPP) was recorded using electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potentials (ERPs) methodologies to assess motivated attention.

An EEG experimental protocol is designed to clarify the interplay between conscious and non-conscious representations of emotional faces in patients with Asperger's syndrome. The technique suggests that patients with Asperger's syndrome have deficits in non-conscious representation of emotional faces, but have comparable performance in conscious representation with healthy controls.
