Hydrophile-lipophile Balance

Hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) is a numerical measure of the relative affinity of a surfactant molecule for water and oil, helping chemists predict its behavior in mixtures. The balance reflects the structure and proportion of hydrophilic and lipophilic regions: lower HLB values generally indicate greater oil affinity, while higher values indicate greater water affinity. In chemistry, HLB guides the selection of surfactants for forming and stabilizing emulsions, solubilizing poorly water-soluble compounds, and improving wetting or detergency. Applying HLB principles supports the design of stable formulations in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, foods, and other materials where interfacial properties determine performance.

2016

This article presents a protocol for the production of protein-based nanoparticles that changes the hydrophobic surface to hydrophilic. The produced nanoparticle is an assembly of gliadin-cyanoacrylate diblock copolymers. Spray coating with the produced nanoparticle changes the surface of target material to a hydrophilic surface.
