Moderate Pressure Reactions

Moderate pressure reactions are chemical transformations conducted above atmospheric pressure but below the extreme conditions used in high-pressure chemistry, offering a practical way to influence reaction behavior. Increasing pressure can enhance contact between gaseous reactants, alter molecular packing, and shift an equilibrium toward the side with fewer gas molecules, depending on the reaction system. Chemists use sealed reactors or pressure-rated vessels to control pressure while monitoring temperature, composition, and reaction progress. These conditions can improve conversion, selectivity, or reaction rates in processes involving gases and volatile compounds, making moderate-pressure methods valuable for synthesis, catalysis, materials preparation, and industrial process development.

Here we present a protocol for performing reactions in simple reaction vessels under low-to-moderate pressures of CO2. The reactions can be performed in a variety of vessels simply by administering the carbon dioxide in the form of dry ice, without the need for costly or elaborate equipment or set-ups.

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease. The Goeckerman regimen, formulated for the treatment of psoriasis, consists of exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) light and application of crude coal tar (CCT). The following protocol is for the administration of Goeckerman therapy for the treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis.

We describe the creation of a rat model of pressure overload induced moderate remodeling and early systolic dysfunction where signal transduction pathways involved in the initiation of the remodeling process are activated. This animal model will aid in identifying molecular targets for applying early therapeutic anti-remodeling strategies for heart failure.
