Multifunctional Monomers

Multifunctional monomers are molecules containing two or more reactive functional groups that can participate in polymer-forming reactions, enabling the construction of complex macromolecular structures. During polymerization, these reactive sites connect individual monomer units through mechanisms such as step-growth or chain-growth reactions, often producing branched polymers, cross-linked networks, or three-dimensional materials rather than simple linear chains. In chemistry, multifunctional monomers support the design of resins, coatings, adhesives, hydrogels, and composite materials with tailored strength, flexibility, durability, and chemical resistance. Controlling monomer functionality and reaction conditions helps researchers tune network architecture and material performance for applications in manufacturing, biomedical materials, and advanced polymer research.

Lipid polyesters constitute the structural components of two cell wall modifications, the plant cuticle and suberin-containing diffusion barriers. In this video, we describe a method to depolymerize cutin from whole delipidated leaves. The method can be applied to investigating mutants compromised in either cutin or suberin biosynthesis.

We developed novel intrinsic multifunctional nanovesicles called porphysomes, which have structure-dependent fluorescence self-quenching and unique photothermal properties, thus functioning as potent photothermal therapy agents. We formulated porphysomes using high pressure extrusion and investigated their photothermal therapy efficacy in a xenograft tumor model.
