Ostwald Ripening

Ostwald ripening is a process in which larger particles, crystals, or droplets grow while smaller ones shrink, driven by differences in surface energy and chemical potential. Because highly curved small particles have greater surface energy, their material dissolves more readily and diffuses through the surrounding phase before depositing onto larger, more stable structures. In chemistry, Ostwald ripening influences precipitates, colloids, emulsions, and nanoparticle suspensions, often changing particle size distributions and reducing total interfacial area over time. Understanding this process helps researchers control material stability, crystallization, catalyst performance, and the shelf life of formulated products.

Plant Hormones

2020

Plant hormones—or phytohormones—are chemical molecules that modulate one or more physiological processes of a plant. In animals, hormones are often produced in specific glands and circulated via the circulatory system. However, plants lack hormone-producing glands. Instead, plant hormones are often produced in regions of active growth, like the tips of roots and shoots. Additionally, even very low concentrations of plant hormones can have a profound effect on growth and development processes.
