Poloxamer 407 Functionalization

Poloxamer 407 functionalization is the chemical modification of Poloxamer 407, a temperature-responsive triblock copolymer composed of poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(propylene oxide), to introduce new reactive or biologically active groups. Chemists typically modify its terminal hydroxyl groups or polymer blocks through reactions such as esterification, etherification, or conjugation, changing its solubility, reactivity, degradation, and crosslinking behavior. These tailored polymers can form injectable hydrogels, incorporate therapeutic molecules, or bind to biomaterials and biological targets. In chemistry and materials research, functionalization expands Poloxamer 407 from a surfactant and solubilizing agent into a versatile platform for drug delivery, tissue engineering, and responsive biomaterial design.

2023

Source: David C. Powers, Tamara M. Powers, Texas A&M In this video, we will carry out the photochemically initiated polymerization of styrene to generate polystyrene, which is an important commodity plastic. We will learn the fundamentals of photochemistry and use simple photochemistry to initiate radical polymerization reactions. Specifically, in this module we will examine the photochemistry of benzoyl peroxide and its role as a photo-initiator of styrene polymerization reactions. In the...

Functional Groups

2020

Functional groups are a group of atoms with characteristic properties, which when linked to the carbon skeleton of a molecule, alter the properties of that molecule. For example, the presence of certain functional groups on a molecule will make them hydrophilic, whereas others will make them hydrophobic. These functional groups are an indispensable part of organic chemistry and important components of biological molecules, such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Each...

Described here is a rapid and effective procedure for functional reconstitution of purified wild-type and mutant CFTR protein that preserves activity for this chloride channel, which is defective in Cystic Fibrosis. Iodide efflux from reconstituted proteoliposomes mediated by CFTR allows studies of channel activity and the effects of small molecules.
