Potassium Iodide Test

The Potassium Iodide Test is a qualitative chemical test used to detect oxidizing agents through their ability to convert iodide ions into iodine. In an acidic or otherwise suitable reaction mixture, an oxidizing species removes electrons from iodide, producing iodine, which gives a brown color or forms a blue-black complex when starch is present. The test provides a rapid indication of redox activity and can help identify substances such as halogens, peroxide compounds, and other oxidants. In chemistry education and laboratory analysis, it illustrates electron transfer, qualitative observation, and the relationship between chemical composition and visible reaction outcomes.

Annexin V and Propidium Iodide Labeling

2023

Staining with annexin V and propidium iodide (PI) provides researchers with a way to identify different types of cell death—either necrosis or apoptosis. This technique relies on two components. The first, annexin V, is a protein that binds certain phospholipids called phosphatidylserines, which normally occur only in the inner, cytoplasm-facing leaflet of a cell’s membrane, but become “flipped” to the outer leaflet during the early stages of apoptosis. The second component is the DNA-binding...

Regulation of Sodium and Potassium

2024

The regulation of sodium and potassium ion concentrations in the human body is a complex process governed primarily by hormones such as aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). Sodium Regulation Sodium ions make up approximately 90% of extracellular cations, with a normal blood plasma concentration of 136–148 mEq/L. A decrease in blood volume and pressure triggers the release of renin from granular cells in the juxtaglomerular complex (JGC), primarily in...

2011

An accurate method for the assessment of cell death is described. The protocol improves upon conventional Annexin V/ propidium iodide (PI) protocols, which display up to 40% false- positive events in cell lines and primary cells from a broad range of animal models.

Soil Nutrient Analysis: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, three soil macronutrients are chemically extracted, combined with color-based reagents, then analyzed using color to determine the nutrient concentration present in the soil sample. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are the main components of soil fertilizer. These methods isolate each nutrient from the soil into a solution that can be analyzed using turbidity and color to determine the...
