Rapid Fabrication

Rapid fabrication is the accelerated production of chemical materials, devices, or structured systems, enabling researchers to move from design to functional prototypes in less time. It typically combines rapid formulation, controlled material deposition or assembly, and process conditions that promote fast curing, reaction, or solidification while preserving the desired structure and composition. In chemistry, these approaches support the preparation of reaction platforms, functional materials, sensors, and laboratory devices for testing and optimization. By reducing fabrication time and material use, rapid fabrication can increase experimental throughput, enable iterative design, and help translate chemical concepts into practical technologies.

The fabrication of electrically addressable, high-aspect-ratio (> 1000:1) metal nanowires separated by gaps of single nanometers using either sacrificial layers of aluminum and silver or self-assembled monolayers as templates is described. These nanogap structures are fabricated without a clean room or any photo- or electron-beam lithographic processes by a form of edge lithography known as nanoskiving.
